  • 3ltr 2nd or 3rd gen.

Got a little bit of compo for a back injury at work coming my way soon and am considering updating from my beloved 2.4. to a 3ltr. But what to go for 2nd of 3rd Gen? Have alway prefered to look of the the 2nd Gen, but they are all getting older so I suppose I need to look at the common sence side of things. The cost of running the day today. So for you guys out there what are the pros and cons, any difference in MPG between the two etc.

    Cheers Spoggle

At the time i bought my 3rd gen i had the opportunity to get a 2nd Gen, low mileage and in very nice condition, very very cheap. I would have modified that into a proper go anywhere off roader, big lift, tyres, air lockers and all that, and kept my 3rd Gen bog standard for daily duties. Unfortunately i missed out on that one, and thereafter the money was spent on other stuff.

I'd be inclined to keep your 2nd Gen and mod it, and buy a 3rd gen for daily duties. In fact the really cool thing would be to have a 3rd gen and trailer to transport your 2nd gen mud monster to and from venues.
    Now it's time to play!

I recently went to look at a 3rd gen. It seemed a lot bigger, wider, longer than my 4runner, I didn`t actually measure it, but are they bigger and,if so, how much?

They are bigger on the inside, like a tardis, more leg room and bigger load area.

You should be able to get at least 4 or 5 bodies in the boot. Very useful!!

Nothing noticable, I'd seriously look at a 3rd Gen these days, there is no difference in offroad ability between a stock or lifted 2nd or 3rd Gen, 2nd Gens have a cool truck type tail gate, are very cool and cheap as chip with lots of spares, 3rd Gens have AWD, ABS, airbags, roof rails and much more leg room inside.

Both have the same motor, but the 3rd Gen is more refined and feels more powerful and seems to get slightly better MPG, but may just be because they are that much newer.

And of course there is the factory fitted intercooler.

Oh, and in theroy cos its the same under the skin as a LC Colorado, it'll legal tow a bigger trailer than the pickup based 2nd Gen.

Cheers guys, Problem I have is that I go over a stone bridge into one of the estates, the 4 Runner JUST goes through. Would hate to "upgrade" to a gen 3 and the bugger won`t fit.

You can get 'Narrow Body' 3rd Gens, without the arches and plastic side panels.
