I don't think there has ever been a flat four diesel surf.

Even Cherrys with Alfa Romeo flat fours or Beetles with air cooled porsche engines don't sound anything like a scooby.

Unfortunately mine has practically lost it's burble due to the aftermarket equal length tubular headers it runs.

Flat four Diesel Surf, why not. Compact and lightweight flat four diesel with 150ps and 350Nm Torque from 1800rpm with over 50mpg...Just wishful thinking

                    Because they're tuned properly.

Subaru deliberately made their flat fours sound like that so that they appealed to the boy/girl/wannabe racers. It worked very well, almost every untuned one I've ever seen is driven by one of their target demographic.

The main reason Subaru's sound like that is due to the unequal length OEM headers. Once you change the OEM headers for aftermarket equal length type the burble all but dissappears. You'd only really hear the exhaust pulses at very low revs or on low rev overrun. The burble though in part is an inherrent characteristic of the engines design though. Even the new diesels have a burble to them. Much more interesting sound to your normal oil burner.

You can buy unuequal length aftermarket headers that retain some of the burble and still sounds nice, if you're into your Subarus of course. You can however generally tell when a car is still running OEM headers because the burble is still very strong across the whole rev range. This burble is unique to Subarus and you can tell them a mile off. But it doesn't mean it hasn't been tuned properly.

Hope this answers your question about the burble.

As for your comment of not tuned properly.....There are very few 4/5dr family cars that can do 0-60 in less than 5.5-6secs, top 145-160mph and do a 1/4 mile in around 13.5-14.5secs, straight out of the box.

Not bad considering your granny could pootle down to the shops and back in one without ever knowing just how quick it is!! Subarus are very docile driven sensibly.
                      Now it's time to play!

I didn't ask a question, I made a statement; which you confirmed in your reply, thanks for that. As you correctly say, the 'burble' (stupid noise) is designed in and easily fixed by tuning the engine.

Was that the 'Pink Jeep' tours in Prescott AZ by any chance? I seem to recall someone mentioning it. I saw their ads when I was there years ago but wasn't there long enough to book a trip.
