        Right. i have just dopped the oil. which really looked very dark and more like the consistency of water rather than oil. there were very small shards of metal on the sump plug. not that many but enough to notice. is this normal with a vehicle of this age or is this the start of my problem.

        now is it worth me going to get some diff oil and just putting it in to see if it will free the diff off or is it totally buggered already?

          I have removed the diff altogether and run my fingers inside the diff housing in the axle and found more little chunks of metal. no bigger a few millimeters long, but enough to know that the diff is probably exhausted. before i stripped it down i did buy som new diff oil and tried to see if the diff had loosened but got so far and came back as it just didnt feel right at all. as it stand on the workbench everything seems ok. the wheel bearings, the ring and pinion seems untouched and still rather tight.

          what do you guys think. and where can i get a locker from as i'm going to put a locker in it if this one is totalled

          cheers guys

            I bought my locker from the states. I spoke to Lockright directly which put me in contact with someone that sells them. It came to, including import duties around the £260 mark if I remember correctly. It was very easy to install and I did it on my own in around five hours start to finish. All I needed was the next door neighbour to come out at just the right time to help pull one of the shafts out of the diff so I could remove.

            Edit, just flicked through the rest of the thread and I would probably decide against doing the above yourself.
            In any case you need to MARK EVERYTHING with a PUNCH as you are taking it apart.

            I've fished out my invoice (has been a year and a month already). My part number for a 4 pinion for the 8" type is PT 1620 and came to $296 including VAT and shipping to UK. Then I had to pay another £40 import duties.
            Purchased from these guys (nice chaps) http://www.justdifferentials.com/
            Oh Nana, what's my name?

              i think i have found another diff but need you guys to help me out a bit. i have a kzn-130 3.0 and the new diif could come from a hilux 97/98 first of the turbo diesels according to gwyn lewis. would the diff fit straight onto my axle all intact, or does it have the same ratio. And lastly will it be a 30 spline like mine. gwyn has the complete axle and has just asked me to see if anyone knows anything about what the other truck use. it does have an lsd aready in it. if the splines are the same and everything else wont fit would the lsd replace my lsd using my diff casing ring and pinion.

              cheers

              oh i should add its from a 2.4

                Use the search function to look for the codes on the VIN plate under the bonnet - it'll be a letter followed by three numbers.

                This should be helpful too.

                (Assuming I'm thinking of the right thing - hopefully someone more experienced/knowledgable will be along to correct me or offer more accurate/detailed advice soon)

                  Thats rather a useful site. i have learned quite a bit off there thankyou. now all i need is help on trying to figure out what this hilux axle has in it. i know its stock and its a 2.4 turbo hilux pickup. now there is no vehicle with it and was just wondering if people knew if the diff or lsd would go straight into mine

                    Look at the code on your VIN plate under the bonnet. Mine is a G144 meaning:

                    G = 8.0" gear
                    14 = 4.875 ratio
                    4 = 4 pinion, open diff.

                    Use the site I linked to above to work out what you've got and ask whoever you got your diff from what the code is for the replacement one (assuming I've understood correctly where you're at with things).

                      yeah mate i got mine its a 30spline 4 pinion lsd with 4.10 ratio. but i want to know what the axle gwyn has got in it. i dont really want to pay him to strip it down and then be the wrong one. i mean he does arbs, but if this lsd is cheaper and will get mine off the drive

                        Mark the flange on the pinion, turn it and count how many turns of the pinion = one revolution of the road wheels....this will give you your ratio, but you need to pull a half shaft to count the splines and shaft diameter.

                          so without sounding stupid then, even if it is a different ratio which it could possibly be. if i got gwyn to chech the splines and if they were a 30 diff. would he the be able to just straight swap the lsd unit onto my crown wheel and put it all back together again?

                            If its a different ratio you won't be able to use 4wd....ask ToniN...front and rear have to match.

                            from my experience the LSD part of the diff are friction plates added to the sun gears of the diff...you can strip and replace these, although the whole diff needs to be set up properly when you do so.

                              does that mean the my ring gear cannot be parted from my lsd unit then? if i used my gears and his lsd unit the ratio would be the same.

                                Some ring gears are bolt on, some aren't, have a look at yours....You will still need to set up the pinion pre-load and tooth contact without the tools to do that you'll end up with either a very noisy diff or a knocking diff that keeps breaking teeth
