  • Problems again

Has anyone else had a clunking and banging noise coming from the rear axle? It started the other day and i thought it was the front. However i jacked up the rear drivers side wheel and tried to spin it. It moved 3/4 turn but then stopped so i pushed it over and it made a really loud crunch. I havent lost any drive through the axle so i'm at a bit of a loss and kind of need the truck by thiss weekend.

any advice or recommendations after all you lot are definately the best online!!!

No, you're right but I'm probably wrong. Do you mean from the rear axle or from the rear axle area? Clunking and banging over bumps is usually the ARBs.

If you mean actual axle, how does it drive? Normal but clunky?

whilst driving it makes the occasional clunk but when doing tighter turns whether at speed or slow it makes the whole truck shunt and a loud cracking clunking sort of noise. i have no idea what it is. am i going to have to strip this axle. :-(

Sounds like the diff might be buggered as long as you are sure it's from the rear.

Have you been running around on the road in 4 wheel drive?

If it's the front it sounds like a CV joint has gone.

Surfs don't seem to suffer, but my old car with a LSD use to bang and clank something chronic - it was like a lump hammer smashing into the underside.
Friction modifier sorts it - stops it from grabbing - but not heard of it affecting our surfs....yet!
                  Just another view!
And as you say, it only affects it once you span (tightened up) the diff - the clank is the LSD letting go.
Does it do it from cold or hot? LSD's don't normally lock up untill oil is up to temp...

right. i hve just jacked up the whole of the rear tyres off the road and spun them. they seem to be alright. no real problem although it is tighter than my 2.4 whose rear wheels will spin forever. when i drop the passenger side wheel i can no longer turn the drivers side without it being really stuborn and loud crunching jolting

Stick the transfer box in neutral and try again. And from that description, it's not the jack

                        Have you got an LSD?

Check the model code on the VIN - should have a 1 or a 5 at the end, I forget which, but NOT a 0...

I'd try changing the oil before tearing the diff apart...

With both rear wheels off the ground, do both wheels turn in the same direction when you spin one side?

If its auto, make sure its' in neutral before trying to turn one wheel. when both wheels are off the ground, gearbox in neutral and you turn one wheel, does the other turn the same way? If so its LSD and trying to turn just the one wheel will cause it to clonk/be tight.
Unless the propshaft rear U/J is foo-baaad, it does sound like the diff has packed up though.
