just to add i have just jacked up the passenger side wheel and left the drivers down on the ground. i tried to spin it forwards and backwards and it locks up. i can get it to go completely round but i makes a huge noise.

also both wheels sound like grinding in the hubs as i turn them. i think i need a new diff. does anyone know where i can get an auto locker from anywhere. if it is the diff then ill upgrade while its out

oh and yes they spin in the same direction.
If both turn the same direction then you have a locked diff for some reason.
Maybe a sun gear has collapsed, you need to take the diff out and investigate.

Is this the Surf that you claimed was producing over 200 bhp at the wheels? Maybe you've been lanching too hard, and done some damage to the crown wheel and pinion. As Albannach suggested, drop the diff oil and see if it contains any metal debris....Cheers....Mick.

See #13, 15 & 27 for how the LSD works. With one rear wheel on the ground, it'll be just about impossible to turn the other wheel by hand.
Check the diff oil, check the prop shaft and then drain off the oil and inspect the diff by removing the backplate.

                Look on the other side.

I fear this job is a bit beyond your current skill level. Perhaps you would be better getting some experienced help organised first.

ok, so i take the prop off and undo the bolts from the front of the diff. is it a straightforward job to exchange the diff if it is broken with a locker one.

also where is the best place to get a locker from and whats the best auto locker round.

Seriously mate don't go there, if finding the bolts was a push then pulling half shafts, setting back lash and installing a locker is way beyond you for the time being.

i dont mind tackling it with help. its just one post said to remove the back plate not the front! I'd rather get it done, i have done everything else on the truck myself thanks to knowledge from books, you guys, and my mates who are mechanics albeit commercial ones. I have never had experience with diffs which is where you lot come into it.

Sorry, didn't realise there was no backplate, have to agree with Mr Yoshie... don't go there.

Do you only get this noise on cornering? or driving straight?

If its cornering, are you sure the fwd isn't stuck/engaged?

Try draining and re-filling with lsd oil,, it could be whats needed...is the prop shaft u/j in one piece?

And one told you there was no backing plate, sods law says you'll believe the wrong person

Drain the oil and look for bits of metal.

Re-fill with the correct oil, if the wrong oil is in there, you'll get the symptoms you describe.

If it's still the same, get a grown up to swap diffs for you, I don't think you can fit a locker to a LSD.

If you're confused, "Google" the difference between "Salisbury type" and "Timken type" rear differential. This may help you to understand....Cheers....Mick.
