We're getting mixed reports here, on one hand, the OP says the truck is clunking and banging and the wheels are hard to turn; on the other hand, he says there are no problems when driving.
If the diff. is gubbed, it'll be gubbed all the time, not just sometimes.
My thoughts are that it's in 4wd.Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

no its not in 4wd as the splines on the front are not connected to the front wheels i took them off as i thought that was the problems. yes it has lsd not that it has ever really worked though. when one wheel is jack and i try to turn it it sticks in the same place which would leave me to believe the inside of the diff is fubar'd.Completely bitten by the off road bug, and what better vehicle to do it in!

A gubbed diff will not be OK at any point, you clearly stated earlier that you only get the occasional clunk when driving. That does not sound like a gubbed diff.
Have you changed the diff oil recently?Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

no i have not. is it worth dropping the oil out of the diff and the removing the back plate to see inside. Would i be able to see any signs of damage just from looking from the back with the diff in situ?Completely bitten by the off road bug, and what better vehicle to do it in!

Q13
"yes (the wheels do turn in opposite directions) it has LSD...."
I believe (but may be wrong) that when it (the LSD) locks the wheels turn together... in the same direction?"B.A." Baracus: "Talk to me, talk sense so I can talk back. Not all this jibberjabber like breaking the peace and all that."

Yep, I can read too, but I'm asking if both wheels turn together in the same direction!

yes both wheels turn. its realy hard to turn independantly from each other thats what i have been saying. it has something to do with the middle part of the diff as i can turn both wheels together without any fuss whatsoever, whell i drop one to the ground an turn one i cant easily get it round without making noise.
oh and yes they spin in the same direction.Completely bitten by the off road bug, and what better vehicle to do it in!
