  • Engine Needed

Just had the dreaded call from JEM servicing. I need an engine! Not just a bit of an engine but a complete engine! Dont suppose anyone has a spare 2LTE engine just cluttering up the place? Anyone know where i could get one that wouldnt need to be imported from Japan? Anyone have any suggestions at all? Would it be better / easier / cheaper to just scrap my lovely old girl and start afresh with a different girl?
Any help would be much appreciated!

Why a new engine complete. Unless something is cracked or broken. Have it rebuilt.
    More info please.

You could try Hilux Bob or Streetluge Chris?

Adrian has told me that it wouldnt be economical to do an engine repair - they have spent 4 hours taking off the head and have discovered that there is something "wrong" with number 4 piston. He thinks its either gudgeon pin in con rod or that there are grooves where the piston rings broken. He said that there was pitting around all the piston bores so in order to find out whether its repairable they would have to remove the bottom of the engine to find out which would be lots more hours. There wouldnt be any guarantee that the engine would be repairable after all that so i might end up having to replace it anyway which would then be lots more money!

Have found one place that will sell me a recon engine for £1621. Adrian at JEM advises against buying an engine from a straight import so it looks like i'm going to have to go with that!

I will go and see Adrian tomorrow , if you want , as I am in the area and take a look myself for you . If needed , I can try someone else for you and see if it can be done cheaper .

That would be great if its not a hassle for you - was just getting ready to beg to the bank (reckon the total cost of repair should come to over £3000 - but waiting for Adrian to get back to me with actual figures). Will PM you my mobile number (altho it hasnt been working too well since i dropped it in the Thames on sunday - but if i cant answer will pick up message and get back to you from land line!)

Shame your not up North as STEVO would rebuild it for you, you can resleve the bores on the surf, your old bores maybe pitted due to corrosion from a head problem, £3000 is a bit steep for a rebuild

If the engine was removed down here and put on a pallet , could a courier not deliver it to Stevo? Cost might bite though .
Van for a day £50 to deliver yourself ? £50 to collect yourself ?

                Only ideas .

Many thanks for all the replies to all - problem is my wife is moving to the Isles of Scilly in September (i am hanging on here until we manage to sell the flat - no mean feat as we live opposite the Porche sales garage on the A4 in chiswick ((all yu surfers wave as you go past now)) - six lanes of traffic outside the front door seems to put people off for some reason?). Anyway thing is i need the surf to get around in and get down to Penzance every other weekend so i can maintain some semblence of a relationship with the better half! A rebiuld would take more time than i have available (needless to say she has no idea of the extent of the problem - have told her its probably just the "flux capacitor" that needs "tweaking") - hey if she's happy then i'm happy! I think JEM are charging about £75 an hour for labour (can anyone tell me why the hell i'm working for the NHS instead of doing my mechanics degree?) and at the end of the day - they've already done about 4 hours investigative work (dont get me wrong - i trust them completely - they have always been honest, and good and VERY expensive - but at least you can trust them! So it looks like the recon engine @ £1600 plus the (at least) £1500 costs for JEM are the only option because its going to be quick and merciless!

Ah well - i wouldnt have felt like a "proper" "member" (ooer) if i hadent experienced the pain that went with being a surf owner!

Seriously though - thanks all! (Especially Vagrant - its a rare thing to find people who are willing to put themselves out for no apparent reason nowadays)
