Instead of adjusting the door, could you install a rolling floor over the existing one on runners similar to the ones you'd find on pull out bins. They could bolt to the floor, and be set up so that when you drop the tailgate it would run out to the end of the tailgate, and when you close the tailgate it would run back into the boot.

You could use a metal sheet or a wooden sheet over the runners, and glue carpet or some other material to it.

The downside is that you'd lose about an inch in the load bay height, but the upside is that you wouldn't have any structural work (there are load tie down points already in the boot, so it could be bolted into them without any welding, and can be easily removed if need be without leaving scars).

Doesn't the new 4runner have a siding cargo bay floor? - sure I saw a video of it somewhere.

Thanks guys, i'm taking all these ideas on board, as i said at the moment it's all just sort of in my head, i must admit just the thought of actually being able to do it (and maybe even be the first to alter a drop down gate) is appealing to me, as i enjoy doing this stuff the messing about is'nt a problem, money is tho so whichever way i do it assumeing i do do it it'll have be cheap,
me and the mrs went half's on the winch, that was the most expensive bit of the crane/hoist, ball bearing runners and possibly another winch will be the most expensive parts of the side step, i have some decent hinges for the gate, or theres the wheel carrier idea,
we looked at ramps ages ago, the problem is that these buggys have such a low ground clearance that thye get stuck on all but the slightest bump, trying to drive on onto a ramp it would bottom out at the bottom of the ramp and at the top resulting in me haveing to lift the scooter onto the ramp and shoveing it over the top end, unless i had a ramp about 30ft long it'd be just as difficult a job getting it in as it is lifting it in, and when my back starts up i cant even pick up a fiver off the deck

Just a thought - how about a drop/raise tailgate like you see on some vans/HGVs/etc?

Could look quite cool on a Surf...

These people sell em for pickups, so it's possible there could be one on a scrapper somewhere that would be an easy fit

Hi mate, no info i'm afraid, i never got round to doing this, it was an idea i had, i'd still like to do it but it's making a pair of suitable heavy duty hinges thats the main problem, after spending about six months last year making the power side step for my wife i'd had enough

American station wagons (their equivalent to our estate cars) have had two position opening tail gates for years, especially the ones from the late seventies. They open as drop down and side swing, the hinge's and latches on them must be able to carry the weight of the tailgate on a Surf.

try googling for details and specs on something like the Ford Countryman or American Station Wagons in general.

If nothing else, it might help with the design of the hinges and latches, where to mount them and how to mount them, plus a lot of the American stuff has tailgate's with a similar profile.

                      Hope this helps
