  • Intercooler / tuning chip benefits....?

I realize this is an area that has previously had quite a few threads dedicated to it, but I am considering trying to get a KZN185 intercooled, despite being pretty happy with the existing Gen 3 SSRG I have. I have been offered an intercooled 1996 model for £2200, which needs some paint and tidying.
I will only buy it if the mpg /power difference is substantial- are claims of up to high 30's on a run from the intercooled version realistic? Would it be an equally sensible idea to get a re-map on the car I have and maybe see quite a difference with that alone; has anyone used any of the power tuning chips with much success?

Power chips are hit and miss unless you spend lots of money doing it properly. Most are a little vague, and you'll need an intercooler fitted to make the most of them anyway.

Intercooled 3.0's are 145hp vs 130 for the non I/C, and more importantly 343 n/m torque vs 287.

So should be slightly quicker or more economical (one or the other remember, never both )

High 30s is a dream, unless maybe you are prepared to do your long run at 56mph. Low 30s is more realistic. I get around 32 on a motorway run.

I get over 300 bhp from my 3.0l third gen since I added a Powerchip powerchip (imported from Australia - really helpful guy there called Wayne Besanko). It does have one or two other mods though and it is a rare Jack Wolfskin 4x4 special edition and an even more rare manual. Not sure of mpg but I get well over 500 miles to the tank, but only if I add a tiny bit of two stroke oil to the diesel. Otherwise it's more like 200.

Some neighbours work at a turbo specialists, and we were chatting about what can be done for the Surf engine. They reckon the engine can take more boost but you'd need to address the exhaust and intercooler first in order for it to work properly without choking.

I believe the two main factors involved in going faster are basically forcing in more fuel and cooler air. The economy benefits would be that you need less revs to make the same power, but you are offsetting this against more fuel per rev.
