  • Spare tyre - what do you do??

more of a thinking aloud thread, but got me thinking.

now i've gne up to 33" tyres my 'spare' isnt part of the set and fi needed it would be almost 4" smaller in diameter

so not the best solution obviously to run it out of size

so what do yo all do?? thinking aloud quetion more than anything

splash out and carry a new tyre n rim on the back/underneath or
just stick with the odd size you have or just not worry about the spare at all

i'm contemplating changing the tailgate for a non tyre carrier type and not worrying about a spare for day to day, if going out off roading/laning throw a spare in the back, but if going on a long trip, put the hanger back on..

i know what wil happen tho, first time i dont have the spare i'll get a puncture...

I would always carry a spare so I have a matching one to my 33's (it also looks cool)

For now if if you are adamant you don't want to carry one have a can of Tyre Weld in the boot. It wont get you out of all situ's but will if you have a small puncture

make up a brace and bolt it against the back window. actually looks good. and easy to get to.

came up with this after i lost the tool to lower the wheel from underneath

i'm not adamant i wont, as said was just thinking aloud about ideas

if money allowed i'd have bought another 16x10 and got the samesize spare, but i was pushing it just to get 4...

i've got the wheell hanger, so thats not needed - if anything i woudl prefer not to have it

i'm guessing then your answer is, you've made a frame to carry a spare..

I got a matching 33/12.50/15 spare when I got the other 4 wheels sorted. It just isn't worth the risk of getting stuck somewhere (remote or not) without it.

If you don't have lockers or LSD's any size tyre will get you home.

We have a 33" spare on back just fine.

Also think about one of these...

I've seen some huge gashes plugged with these, and have used mine for 2 nail holes now. They are fantasic (I can get them shipped if you have trouble finding one)

Google Safety Seal, they have vids and pics. While legally you're only allowed to repair punctures on the tread area, I've seen 1" long gashes in sidewalls repaired and hold air to get you at least off the trail. They are brilliant for nail and screw holes. I had a huge hole from a bit of wire sticking of some re-enforced concrete thats been repaired about 3 years now. :-)

Cool, I bought my Safety Seal kit back from the US after a trip to the Rubicon, and seeing first hand how useful they are, so not had to find one in the UK.

these repair kits aren't meant to be used on road vehicles. When i had in puncture in one of Lucifers tyres ATS said about using one of these repairs but they weren't allowed to on road vehicles

Rich you are correct they are illegal for use on UK roads.{as is speeding } However, it beats walking and lets you carry on playing in the mud.
