BIG Tyres & Wheels - questions for 5" lift.

im thinking of buying another surf and using it on and off the road, if i get it raised 5" (i have read the tutorial) then what tyres should i go for, im trying to get an idea what its gonna cost me to get offroading, i might get one with a lift already so it may be the wheels and tyres i need to source.

whats the difference in cost between 31" and 33" tyres and what wheels will i need, how much does ride quality and mpg suffer if i was going to get a 3.0td.

i take it these things are like hens teeth to get second hand?

33's would fit with a 5" lift - 33's are more expensive than 31's as you should replace the rims as 33's are wider (normally) but they do look the mutts!

With a 5" lift you'll prob get 35's on,(if you can afford em) i think rodleach only had around that amount of lift plus some bashing away at the inner rear of the front arches
33's will fit no bother, i have 33's on 15x8 rims and they fit fine, (4" lift front)

well money will be a big factor lol, so will depend on the difference between the sizes and effects on ride quality and mpg,

having never bought these before i had no idea, its a big cost on top of the price of the surf i may buy, i may be better buying the 31" tyres and sticking to the original rims.

Save yer money, the bigger tyres will only give a wee bit of extra clearance at the diffs.
You should lift as little as you can but as much as you need.

A rear locker and some good 31 MT tyres will get you much further.

Bigger wheels also puts a lot more strain on the trans' unless you gear down the diffs and/or the transfer case to compensate. Anything more than than the knarlier green lanes will see CV's broken.

That's just not true.
I've been running 33's in the worst Clog conditions for 3 years and never broken a CV or anything else. (except a front diff, but I was towing a trailer through 3 ft of mud with a Jimny on it)

I thought 31" was pretty damn close to stock anyway on a 3rd Gen?
