  • Spinning tonight...

Having just sorted out my wifi NAS, and thus all the music on there, I've been rediscovering allsorts.

Currently finding it hard to stop myself air-guitaring myself around the room to the Buzzcocks

"Sooo why eyy eyyy cant I touch it?"

Nice work Andy! How is that wifi nas going? Stable? Wifi is a little congested around here but lucky for me no one seems to know that there are only three 802.11g/b channels that don't interfere with each other. One is slightly not congested so I take advantage of that.
I've 45GB of music that I've been building up for a few years. Still plenty of music to add to it that I've not as yet. I only wish there was some easier way of transferring that to the car for the long drives.
        Oh Nana, what's my name?

Network Attached Storage. It's basically a hard disk or series of hard disks made available for sharing on the network. The main sales headline is "Loads more porn!"

So it's another computer? How would that be better than the one I have with shared music/ files on it?

NAS boxes are usually small as they only house a few hard disks in a RAID configuration and a network adapter. They are also simple as there is really not much to them and run a simple Linux OS.

You could of course build your own small NAS box from old components into a small shuttle PC case. Another possible way to get the "music and files anywhere" feel would be to share your music or documents folder on your current machine which could be reached wirelessly. If wireless is not an option you could extend your network to the mains wiring using Powerline adapters. It all depends on how you will be watching the video or playing the music.
Simplest way for me is to use the audio output of the PC to the audio input of the sound system / hifi.

Well, I dont have one of those NAS thingys, but I have 30GB of music on my computer and a thing called a Roku Soundbridge in my lounge hooked in to my amp. It can play everything wirelessly from the PC and pump it in to the room. Its probably not as sophisticated as a NAS thingy but works fine for me. I can also get internet radio on it

Ps3/xlog will stream your music over wifi from PC.. Folks with a BTHomehub can connect an eternal HDD to the hub and make it accessible to any device on your network, or directly to your AV amp if it's clever enough

On topic tho.. Thought you mean spinning as in the 'cardio workout' spinning. If you're into your cycling it's great!

No, spinning as in the old black plastic things - though now I'm spinning HDs

Much prefer spinning the pedals outside rather than sitting on a bike in a room full of sweaty gits watching cr@p on the telly.

Charlie, the NAS is about the size of a couple of half dozen egg boxes and just sits there on your wireless network looking like a drive in your machine. Ours is in the loft out of the way and accessible from any of our computers.

Bogus - I have a Squeezebox. Similar sort of thing to yours I think. Behaves like a CD jukebox, but plays any music on the network.
