  • BJ Spacers

I decided to fit my BJ spacers today.

So I removed my ARB (snapping both ARB links, ordered new from Roughtrax)
I replaced both offside BJ's (I did the nearside a year ago due to MOT failure)
Replaced brakelines with extended braded one.

Got out grinder to cut grind/cut of the bit of the wishbone that interferes with the spacers, and panicked (spelling) a bit and decided not to grind anything

I have to grind off some of the rolled lip on the underside of the upper wishbone - correct?

Looking at the lip in relation to the BJ bolt hole - I'm thinking I will have to grind off somewhere between 5-10mm - Is that right?
“Do or do not... there is no try.”

Yes you do need to grind off about 10mm, (maybe a bit more) just enough for the spacers to sit correctly (flush with the upper part of the wishbone) it is a bit arse clenching but it's ok,

Thanks Popeye that's exactly what I wanted to hear - by the way what Intercooler did you use in your 2.4? any chance of some pictures of it fitted so I can see how you've done your pipework?

I was told it's from a mitzi L200, bl00dy big thing tho, pipework was a pain and expensive, dont know if these pic's help, i had to use loads of bends and reducers etc to get the connections, impossible without the 2" body lift, the fan's from an escort rs2000 or whatever they are called,

Ment to add- the second pic i still have the air-con pump on there, i needed to remove it to connect up the air pipe from the filter to the turbo, no big deal as i'd already removed the fans etc, i was gonna use the pump as a compressor (air) but ended up with the comp from mark (stien)

Popeye, do you have to remove your Intercooler to topup your engine oil?

No, i did have to make up a sort of tube and cap fitted in the filler cap hole tho, it make filling slower but easier than removeing the cooler,

and the dip stick a bit of a bugger to, had to alter the angle

Your not a shiner fan then Manc?

Ohhh no mate I love Shinny but at the moment its been used as a daily so its always dirty and grimy. I have an Oil and Coolant leak at the moment as well so that does not help keeping her clean.

When I had cars they were washed and polished every weekend in the Summer, but the size of the Surf means that you have the Fourth bridge to do.

                Clense
                polish
                Wax

And even clay if its not been done for some time.

I clenched my buttocks and went for it with the grinder!

I now have BJ spacers on the front - I also fitted freewheeling hubs

I still need to refit my front ARB but I need to fabricate some 1" ARB spacers first - and I still need to drop the diff 'cos the CV angles are a bit extreme!

Does no one do pics on here?!?!?!

                    PICS PLEASE!

So what you gonna end up with? 2" BJ's 1" on the TB's and a 2" body lift?

Glad to hear it's all going to plan!

                      Hi John!

I've got 2" body lift, +2" Springs, +2" Spacers (coil and BJ) wound up torsion bars. The truck is sitting at about 41" at all wheel arches looks good.
About 29" to the bottom of the doors

I'll take some piccy's tomorrow and post them on here.

I also ordered my winch today so am going to be needing a bumper soon (are you reading this Tony?)

Now I'm going to need to find some mud

If you have fitted free wheeling hubs, you don't need to drop the diff. You only going to engage 4wd offroad and the cv s can with stand that. It also keeps the extra height you've gained.
                        Non intercooled nothing.

Okay - I was going to drop the diff because I'd heard (read on here) that it screwed the CV joint if the angle was too extreme when off roading (refered to somewhere on here as gubbing?) - the hubs were fitted to stop the CV boots splitting (and to take the load off when driving normally on roads)

I fitted BJ spacers to my first surf. I never dropped the diff, and i never changed cv joints or boots in three years.

Must be a Scottish word! Did you off road yours? I just don't want to be changing CV joints too often - It's a pain in the Ar$£! and expensive
