  • Progress is Made

Well after a slow start to the day due to a delayed delivery, it was soon all hands to the barrows

After a busy thirty minutes we had the concrete in and began the laborious job of tamping and levelling

Once all was levelled Honest Al felt he had to go with tradition and place a silver sixpence in the completed job for luck

followed by the obligatory pet paw prints from the wife's cat

    The completed garage base

And all it took was two son's, two forum members, and a next door neighbour

    BIG THANKS to all involved.

Phase two will be starting shortly

I'll update as when I get to make some progress, things are a little slow at the moment due to working away from home so much.

I'd sort of heard of the sixpence, and suppose it must be similar to the rivet on a ship

Many years ago,I would be about ten,I used to help my father in the building trade. If the job involved demolition my job was to check under the doorstep, wood or stone it mattered not.Often a coin was found,or it might be a small item of no real value. We were told by a local museum that coins or other synbols of good luck were often left by builders, not only to give good luck to the new owner but also to ensure that they themselves would be assured of good fortune in the years to come.
Very old buildings were said to have a Sovereign under the doorstep, this made us even more vigilant ,for obvious reasons.

As with most stories you take it with a pinch of salt, but when working for a farmer about eight years ago I had occasion to go to the local cattle auction s with him in Leek, after the price was agreed upon, it was quite the norm for the seller to give the buyer money above the agreed price, not needed but it was considered to give "good luck" to the buyer, when I queried it I was told curtly,"its just the way we do it".
It can be likened to the "steps" you sometimes see protruding from the side of a chimney stack, they are for witches to rest on,if not there the witch may take a displeasure with the household and do it harm!I was also once told it is a variation of the Gargoyles you see on church walls, they help ward off evil spirits. Not many builders, however "macho",would rebuild a stack and remove the steps,Woe betide!!!!!!

So whether its fact or just superstition I know not,but from the age of about ten we always used to put a silver sixpence somewhere in the place we were working.

Since dad passed away 25 years ago my building work has been restricted to a lot less complicated works, but wherever and whatever the job has been ,I have always put a sixpence in the plaster, wall or concrete of every job I have been involved in,even my own home.As at Growlers, even if it were not my own job,it was done, but only with the O.K. from the owner.
Yes,it may all be hocus pocus and a fairy story, but who amongst us wont walk under a ladder,or have thrown spilt salt over their shoulder.
I once knew a bloke who walked under a ladder and died the next day
he was 102 years old though.

Base has dried out well so managed to get the framing removed and tidy up the front of the slab, along with a bit more road stone for the drive section

Reckon another ton of road stone + framing and I'll be ready for the next load of concrete

                      IMHO, obviously

                      What a crock of $hit!

I firmly believe you make your own "destiny" and don't believe in luck, only good fortune.... very different things. Luck is "out the blue" Fortune is of your own making.

Personally, all those small coins you keep burying, I'd save up and buy something with...

Nice base though Andy, if a little thin!

After a bit of a delay due to putting my back out again, I've finally got the last of the concrete down and drive finished at last.

Next on the agenda is to empty the garage ready for dismantling, prior to modding and rebuilding on new base.

Feels like it's getting somewhere at last

Sorry that I didn't get back to you about popping down to help you out with this!

If you need help later on in the summer, let me know and I'll see if I can sort out coming down to help.

Interesting topic about the coins for good luck, I build buses and every one I work on has a comedy cock and balls on it, hidden from view, left there so one day in the future when one of the bus fanatics restores it he will find my handiwork.
