Hiya pal.
Can you post a link or tell me the name of the earbud headphones you bought.
You also said that expensive didnt mean quality...therefore how can I tell which are good ?
I'm not looking to spend that much, maybe half what you paid. What's improved?
Volume?,
Sound quality?
Fit?

The ones I bought are Panasonic RP-HJE900E-K. I spent weeks trawling audio forums to see what was recommended, every head-to-head had them at the top of their lists. I've had them for a while now, so there may be better on the market now.

The runner up places were usually filled by Stennheiser.

Quality, for me, is SQ; I would sacrifice a bit of comfort for better sound quality.

Keep an eye on eBay, they appear there now and again for about £100
