  • Newbie saying hello (with questions questions questions!)

    Hi everyone,

Have been reading the forum for a couple of weeks with the idea of gaining some useful insights from you guys into what to expect from Surf ownership. Can't wait to get one, I've pretty much narrowed it down to the one I want, but I've got a couple of questions which I was hoping you could help with please?

    1. I'm looking to import one from Japan, and have been targeting the KDN185 over the KZN185, can you tell me your opinions on whether that's the right choice? (the KDN certainly seems harder to come by and would appear to have the most wrinkles ironed out as it's the newest Gen 3 available with the most powerful engine).

    2. I know the KDN uses the D4-D engine, which has 170hp compared to the 140hp of the KZN. Is there a noticable difference when you consider the Surf weighs 2 tons? I appreciate they're not built for speed so if the difference isn't noticeable then who cares!

    3. I think I've read somewhere that people have had issues with the injectors on the KDN, is this the same issue that affects the Hilux pickup mk6 made in 2007, and is it easy / cheap to rectify in the UK?

    4. Is it possible to get the KZN / KDN chipped to increase power, using something like a Tunit chip? Can you get one for both engine types? I have read some of the threads on these, but haven't quite managed to ascertain whether they're good / bad. Some say they worsen fuel economy, some say they don't. If you can get the KZN up from 140 hp then that's pretty good, no?

I have loads more questions, but will come back when this post gets moderated...

    Thank you everyone

IIRC the 1KZ 3.0D can't be tuned without sacrificing fuel economy. It's too basic an engine. You can either force more air in or more diesel. There are some long debates about tuning this lump (Dieselbob anyone?) and I believe the outcome was that any gains were smoke and mirrors.

The 1KD engine, according to Wiki:

"...produces 17% more horsepower with 11% less fuel consumption than its predecessor, the 1KZ engine. This engine was first used in Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, 3rd Generation Hilux Surf and now used in the Toyota Fortuner, Hiace and Toyota Hilux.
It presents a big issue with the injectors which is still pending to be solved. In Spain, they change the injectors within the first 7 seven years after buy, but still no solution is provided by the manufacturer."

There is an article here on tuning the 1KZ:
      http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsit...30Lpowerup.pdf

Not sure about the figures quoted in it, according to Wiki the std lump is 130hp and the intercooler 145.

No injector worries on the 1KZ!

Hello welcome - Ask Bushwacker about a Lexsurf if you want power!
Otherwise an Intercooled 3.0 3rg gen is next best.

I have never heard of anyone with a KDN185. It may just be an age thing (I think the KDN185 was only introduced in 2000), but I don't think anyone's got one.

A few on here do have experience of D4Ds and might well chip in soon. I would assume it is a much better engine that the 1KZ. In terms of tuning, not much you can do to a KZ other than put an intercooler on (or buy an intercooled one in the first place....)

The 2.7 (3rz-fe) is the next best, 150 bhp out of the box and no smelly hands when you fill the tank.

Thanks for the welcome and replies everyone

Definitely a Surf I'm after, just trying to get the right one first time, hence the research before buying. Sounds to me like it's the KZN185 I'm going to go for as that's the one that can drink diesel and veg. And power isn't the be all and end all, I've got another car for that

Main criteria for this are that I get one that has relatively low mileage, has been well looked after, will go anywhere, is reliable and will allow me to do my own servicing where possible, think that points directly to a Surf?!

Can I ask, why would you want to use veg oil?

I would imagine because it's cheaper than diesel, Vince.

I think the point in "that's the one that can drink diesel and veg" is that a 1KZ will run on veg, whilst a 1KD, being common rail, would blow itself to pieces if it worked even a little bit.

I don't think it's a bid at your precious petrol
