wierd... we were talking about this at uxbridge as TonyN's mk1 has TOYODA on the engine...
apparntly it's Mr Toyoda that started the company but they changed it to Toyota cos it sounded more western.... dunno what cowboy films had to do with it though??

Hmmm I wonder if that's where "Land Rover" got their name from then - definately a bit "cowboy" now
Toyoda is a family name in Japan, I'm not sure that Toyota is. The change could just have been based on pronounciation as the kana characters for "ta" and "da" are basically the same (た=ta, だ=da). Their marketing may have changed it to differentiate, who knows.
