apparntly it's Mr Toyoda that started the company but they changed it to Toyota cos it sounded more western.... dunno what cowboy films had to do with it though??NO WORRIES!

Toyoda is a family name in Japan, I'm not sure that Toyota is. The change could just have been based on pronounciation as the kana characters for "ta" and "da" are basically the same (た=ta, だ=da). Their marketing may have changed it to differentiate, who knows.
