  • Is a 3.0TD cheaper to run than a 4.0 Petrol Jeep?

Obviously it must be but by how much?

Having finished uni I am now a qualified teacher but the only job I can find is an 80 mile round trip! My jeep was OK for pootling around Brighton but now I need to reduce my fuel costs without driving a knob on wheels. Will a 3.0 Surf do it for me?

surf is better by about 5 mpg around town....
But the jeep will claw back this and more on motorways if driven carefully... according to my dad's data...

Amazing! What about A roads compared to motorway? I can either take the back roads to school (generally 40mph but alot of cnrs etc) or a staedy 60 up the A23/M23/M25?

Dunno, but he was getting 16-17 on shrt runs and the surf does around 22 mpg.
On longer runs the modern jeep engine returns more, but can;t be that specific on values as I don't own the jeep Cherokee Sport.

I wouldn't base my purchase on these values though, they are two very different machines...

Its an N reg Jeep Grand Cherokee and I thought I was only getting 19-20 mpg on a long run. Maybe I have to bite the bullet and loose the ability to squash things.

I get better mpg from my grand cherokee than the surf. My surf is a 2.4. Driven sensibly, i get 32mpg from the jeep on a run and around 27-28 round town. Put the boot down, ive had it at 4mpg!

It will be a lot cheaper to run when you factor in things breaking etc.
