  • Any Fishermen?

A couple of old boys pulled this out of the Danube today, They asked me for a hand to weigh it. It weighed just under 40kgs.
I asked what it was but I didn't really understand what they said. It was after lunch, they were pretty well gone

What is it? looks like a bl00dy great goldfish to me.

Wrong shape dorsal fin for carp, though the body is carp shaped. That'll use some room in the freezer eh?

I thought carp, but I know the word for carp and that wasn't what they said.
I've just shown the pic to a neighbour and he said it's a 'Tolstolobik' which I googled, and it is a type of Carp.

          Fresh water.

Could just be the way the dorsal fin is hanging that looks un-carp like then. The rest of it certainly looks very carp-ish, capish? Capisci?

            From Wiki

            'Tolstolobik
the Russian common name for two genera of fish of the family Cyprinidae, each including a single species: the silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), which weighs 20–25 kg, and the bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis), which weighs 30–35 kg. The bighead carp is distinguished from the silver carp by its larger head, darker coloring, and shorter intestinal tract. The natural area of distribution of both is China and the southeastern part of the USSR (the Amur basin). Both fish feed on plankton—the silver carp on phytoplankton, and the bighead on phytoplankton and Zooplankton. The reproduction period is in spring and early summer; the eggs are natant.'

Though more appropriately, the 'Ferguson' carp. As in Sir Alec.

He's both a bighead, and does carp a lot.

Now all you have to do is catch the chips to go with it.

Edit, I heard they are trickier to catch as they are usually smaller and thus a lot quicker through the water. You have to be lightning fast (like Muhammad Ali) to catch them. Apparently.
