I've got both as well. The Cherokee will start to break a lot earlier than the surf, things will stop working etc.
The 4.0 is pretty grunty for off road, so I would go with that for off road and enjoy the Surf for on road, flying through Mot's etc.
    Just my 2 bobs worth.

      Ello and welcome

I got my surf in 2009, at the time I thought I'd keep it tidy and not off road it, then went to Bala with it just to give it a go... never looked back hehe great machines anywhere you take them.,

No kidding, I've just spent £450 putting the steering right on the Cherokee, it was all over the road! New tie rods, pitman arm, steering gearbox, track rod ends and a wheel alignment! It's the quadra-trac permanent 4wd and has seen minor mud ( deep enough to sink to halfway up the wheels, I couldn't resist) and on road tyres, it was the sheer grit that got me out!

On the surfs downside, once I put it into 4wd, it takes ages to get it back to 2wd, and when it does finally flick back to 2wd, as far as I can tell, it's purely by chance! Mind if it's own!

The other problem is, the cherokee off road parts seem to be few and far between and crazy money.

I did however have an older 4.0 Cherokee, the square type, with kingpin extreme trekker tyres, 4 inch lift and thereof cut off from behind the back doors and it was UNSTOPPABLE offroad, until it went on what was left of its roof, that killed it nicely!
