Had to go up to Edinburgh on Sunday for a meeting with the Charge nurse, Her manager the Consultant Psychaitrist and the homes GP regarding my mum's acute admission to hospital due to dehydration. She was so dehydrated that she was unresponsive. Within a couple of hours of intravenous fluids she made a miraculous recovery. As my mum has dementia, she has to rely on the 'carers' to attend to her needs. She has also lost loads of weight. We were in the meeting for over 2 hours, where they tried to make excuse after excuse. The fact was that my mothers blood sodium was seriously elevated to the degree that there is a 50%- 75% chance that she could have died. Being no other reason for this , dehydration was the cause.
It does not bear thinking about how many of these elderly vulnerable people die in nursing homes due to the same reason.
