  • Whats this bit called? How is it replaced?

Apparently this is worn. It's not the track rod end, but the bit the end goes into. What would that be called and where can they be bought? IS this something that can wear or is it simply the bush that needs replacing?

Sorry for poor pic, stolen from Roughtrax website.

Looks like the hub housing to me. Is the bottom balljoint bolted onto the hub like the 3rd gens ? If so, it's the bottom balljoint.

Guessing these are replacable Graham? Roughtrax don't seem to stock them, although I'm not really sure what I'm looking for :/

Top and Bottom ball joints were replaced last weekend, this isnt one of those. The top / bottom ball joints take the weight load. The item in the picture is connected to the steering components and doesnt bare weight load.

the track rod end is bolted through the hub one end and screwed in to the adjuster tube the other

It's definitely an outer track rod end (I've replaced these on mine). If it's been on there a long time it's likely that the adjuster tube will be stuck on and may need heating to get off. If so, that's an MOT failure in itself, so it's best to replace the tube as well as the track rod end.

You can probably replace it yourself but you'll also need to get your tracking reset, as you're unlikely to get it just right even by measuring the old total length (outside edge of inner to outside edge of outer) of the existing set up before taking it apart, although it should get you almost there.

Thanks for the replies. So I got home and took a look at what bits he said I need replacing as he marked them with some tip-ex. Turns out its the outer track rod end on the drivers side and the inner on the other. May as well just replace the whole tie rod on both sides.

When he described it to me on the phone, I said "what you mean the track rod end" to which he said "no, the bit the end goes into".

Now going by that, wouldn't that say to you that he meant the bit that goes onto the hub?

Albannach if you read this it looks like you're about to be correct in your diagnosis.

I remember when I was a kid I used to plead with my mum to let me stay up until 930 on a Friday night to watch these. One of the best shows ever. I have watched every episode numerous times, think they are brilliant. I remember one of my mums friends had a flight jacket with the red dwarf logo on the breast and the back. Wanted one bad!
                              Thanks!
