Alluding to how quick some people are to 'take offence' on behalf of others when they aren't even involved.

For example, the people in Birmingham City Council who were offended enough (or terrified OF offending) by Christmas decorations in the city, on behalf of other, non-christian religions, to mandate that decorations would not be put up a few years back.

Midlands Today (our local news) found Muslims, Sikhs etc etc to interview on the streets of Birmingham, and NONE of them were bothered by the fact that we celebrate Christmas, and most actually enjoyed the decorations.

Perhaps that's an extreme example, but its not an isolated one.

I suppose if it offends them then they may be quick to take up the mantle of defender and 'speak' for the target of offending remarks/actions.
It's very easy for folks to jump on an available bandwagon to vent their spleen, not so much PC brigade but people normally denied a voice or justly ignored in normal circumstances.
It's surprising how much sexism/racism/disabilism/ageism etc is prevelant in normal day to day life that doesn't get this much attention or corrective action.
In any other normal working environment this would have been canteen banter or at worse thoughtless remarks made by someone in a senior position with little consequence.
Media hype and attention make it a story where otherwise unrecorded it's just everyday stuff for blokes like Mr Gray.
