  • Ball joints and suspensiony type stuff

Did all four ball joints, lowered the front and replaced a split inner CV boot today.

One thing to note about the Roughtrax ball joints : they are slightly larger at the top and so for anyone that has ball joint spacers may need to grind the bottom of the spacer so it seats correctly on the top of the ball joint. As my spacers are five pieces of cut sheet metal, I only needed to grind away at one a little bit. I'm not sure if the Roughtrax joints have always been like this or not but just some input so to keep in mind.

I also lowered the front of the Surf about an inch. I did this for comfort and to be honest I lifted it too much - It sits a lot nicer now. I also think that due to the height even with the lowered diff the CV angles would be happier slightly eased off. During the snow I managed to split one boot just enough to let grease through. You couldnt actually see the split though.

Took a while to do both sides - a 2 poster ramp was very useful!

The truck drives a lot better, no more noises over bumps and the steering doesnt wobble as much. I think fitting a procomp steering damper will help more on that.

Just need to have tracking checked and done if required.

Did you find out what was loose on the steering rod?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

He said it's supposed to be like that and it's not loose...

I'll see about posting a video. It is looking more like it is just me being paranoid...
Since doing the work today, the steering doesnt dance about hardly at all now and the truck drives in a straight line... May be it was just ruined ball joints? I really appreciate you posting back and offering advice the other day. So cheers.

The Roughtrax balljoints I fitted sat fine on my bj spacers. (4crawler ones).

Any pics of what you had to grind off?

tbh I don't like the idea of lots of slices in a balljoint spacer. I'd have thought unless the bolts through them are interference fit they'd be liable to move around.

No pics sorry . The problem was where the grease nipple fits, that raised round piece covers more area on top the ball joint. So, the distance between the raised area and the edge of the top of the ball joint is narrower. We just ground a piece out to fit over the top.

The dont move around, although even if the bolts are loose they could move a few mm in either direction but it wouldnt effect the operation of the wishbone. You probably wouldnt even notice until you hit a bump large enough to cause noise.
