Thought lockers were standard on Colorado, but not Prado - hence why not on 3rd gen Surf? P'raps lockers are an option on 3rd gen 4Runner as that would be the equiv of UK Colorado?

    Oh I dunno!

Meh. I looked into manaul lockers in the summer and decided the automatic option was the easiest, cheapest method and suited me.
What I don't understand though is why go through that expense and time consuming process when there are other alternatives that accomplish the same job. I must be missing something? It still took me a whole Sunday afternoon to fit though, but I did do the job solely on my own. Well, a neighbor came out for a chat and I roped him in to pulling on one of the shafts as the brake pipe kept pushing it back in and stopping the 3rd member coming out
Thanks a lot for posting that write up. The pictures of the axle removal is useful as I'll be doing that soon.

You know what the Imports are like, if lockers where an option on a 3rd Gen Surf i'd have thought I'd have seen one by now.

I'm sure at least one Colorado i've worked on didn't have a rear locker, but not 100% sure, maybe stock, but with lockers and rear discs they are a good rear axle swap on a 3rd gen if you find one.

I'd be interested to hear what peoples views are. I did a lot of googling before I bought my auto locker. The main idea was the convenience you could manually unlock the diff when not requiring it. The difference with the auto locker is that you just ease off the throttle a little in a turn and it will allow outside wheel to turn faster than the inside (in my case anyway).
To be honest, all my locker consisted of was two big cogs, two thickish washers and four metal dowels and some tiny springs. This is it. You drop the planetary gears out of the open diff and fit these cogs over the rods the planet gears sat on.

The only reason I didn't want an Auto locker in the back is I love driving in the snow and ice so much, I didn't want both back wheels spinning together and the arse slewing around to much unless I want it to, so we got a manual ARB locker.
