  • Tonight's pottering resulted in...

    ...this!

Take one old Garmin Streetpilot which needs a battery replacement. Take it to bits to fit said battery. Have a 'Eureka' moment and realise that (with a little modification) it will fit in one of those vents you never use in the centre dash. The dremel and the hot glue gun have seen some action tonight!!

I'll get an external antenna for it because there's no decent place to put the built in one, but otherwise, I'm rather pleased.

Top work Andy! I have a windscreen mount Garmin GPS antenna. It attaches in a corner with 2 suckers. I'm not using it so you can have it if its any good to you. PM me your address I'll post it off to you tomorrow.

                  Haha, does it show?

I have remote central locking to fit tomorrow, and spotlamps, and scanner antenna, and oil change. Might even get under and grease all my greasables!

                      Fitted and working!

Quite please with the result. Fitted the antenna so it's more or less horizontal and only looking through a bit of padding and vinyl in the upper dash. Seems to work, though I only get 4 bars on the signal strength rather than the usual 5. An external antenna will still help.

Ended up taking power from the acc+ve on the clock, which involved small bits springing out of the small clock when I took it apart to get at the power connections.

That's a tidy install mate. Antenna on it's way today.

Very neat, well done, much more use than the old vent!

                            Always room for more power!!!!

                              eBay, around a fiver.

Mine seems to work OK with the original one installed under the top of the dash, though thick cloud / rain might upset it as its down to 4 bars on signal rather than the usual 5.

The bezel is the matt plastic side of an old HD caddy by the way! The original Garmin bezel is curved so no good.
