  • Advice on Land rover V8 4.6 Please

    Hi all
Just wondering if amongst us there are any pros/pro DIY'ers that have experience with the Rover V8 4.6??
My poor old Range Rover has sat in the corner for the last 15 months since I rebuilt the engine, but failed to replace the part that was the problem!

Basically shes gone the way of most of these engines,as anyone "in the know" will know,in that it has slipped a liner, cracked the block,or what ever happens here to cause the overheating problems!

I have looked at a couple of other forums, one of which I got no response and the other I don't like the tone on the forum (full of clever dicks).

What I need to know is if anyone has bought a replacment block for one of these, and how do you diagnose if my block is unservicable for an exchange basis?

    Thanks all

    Mark

          Yeh good question!
Cause I kept convinsing myself the head gasket was leaking,or the head was cracked, and did'nt want to face up to the fact that the block was probably the problem!!

Having now spent £600 on camshaft followers, push rods, new head, timing chain, gaskets thermostat, water pump etc, I found water on spark plug 7 and the ugly truth became apparent!!
So now I have the choice of leave it there to rot, break it,or repair it!

When its going,I love it,the sound of a V8 is intoxicating

As far as I can see Rimmers don't cover the 4.6,think they cover more the 3.5 & 3.9/4.0.

What I'm looking for is a bare block with Top hat liners. ACR do one on an exchange basis for £975 + VAT,but I don't know anything of the firm!!

          Regards

          Mark

they do all the v8 engines that are fitted in the r/rover some parts are OE some are pattern parts depending what stock they have for reconditioning depends what blocks are available they probably can help in sorting your own block and re-doing the liners like i said best to ring them and talk to one of the technicians they have or give devon 4x4 a bell they deal with quite a few v8 rovers in defenders and the like all retrofitted or failing that one of the members on here has a brother who breaks r/rovers and l/rovers

Steve at S&S knows Rover V8`s inside out, may be worth a call.

Yeh I think I need to get on the blower tommorow,Although a second hand engine, from a breaker could be an option,as I think it will get sold this year to help upgrade the body shifter(Galaxy) to a new model!!!

                Who's the breaker then???

I'll have a hunt around the site! Cheers
I'd rather buy from somone I "know",as the problem with buying a second hand engine is you could buy exactly the same problem!!!

                          Friendly bunch on here.

Steve puts the V8`s in TR7s and works on a lot of TVR`s. Helpful guy, give him a call he may have one available.

The range rover 4.6ltr engine is basically the 4.0 ltr v8 engine, the only difference being it has a shorter stroke crankshaft, of some 10mm giving it a swept volume of 4.6 ltrs.I would try RPI ENGINEERING.oh and by the way if the heads are warped on the 4.6 they are junk, you cant skim the heads on the 4.6 ltr engines otherwise you get piston intrusion.

                              Thanks Surfenstein!

RPI's prices are a bit strong for my liking.I'm hoping to get out of this one for under £1500!
I had the heads on mine skimmed last year as a matter of course and I rebuilt with composite Gaskets.
