  • Buying a Hilux Surf 3.0

Hi there, i currently own a Nissan Silvia and its getting a pain to run it daily, therefore im looking at buying a 3.0 Surf, i just wanted to ask a few questions really starting with, are the gen 2 and gen 3 engines the same?/chassis etc

My mate has a gen 3 and what sort of prices should i be looking around these days?

How many mpg do you normally get around town?

What should i look for in signs of wear or what tends to go on them how bulletproof are they?

Is the tax going up on these this year or are they £210 a year?

How reliable have they been for you and are the parts expensive?

Is it a good towing car as i really wanted to tow my silvia on a trailor

    Thanks for the help

18-22 depending if it's Auto or Manual n how lead footed ya ah Consider running on Veg Oil, SVO, WVO to reduce costs) Bio too.. (ya don't really buy these 2 ton Trucks for their Mpg)

Depends really on how good/bad it's bin looked after before you acquired it n how ya treat it afterwards

Personally, ol 2.4, 6n half years @ £600 for servicing, repairs, mods etc .... 3.0l nearly 3 years now @ £400 Reliability speaks for it's self really !!

Engine is the same, don't know about chassis, gen two looks a bit more butch

2-3grand for early models, up to whatever you want to pay for later

      20-25ish

head went on mine last year, keep a close eye on the cooling system and no problems as long as you service the fan(fresh oil) change stat, rad cap and renew coolant every two years. 4 years of ownership and I needed lower ball joints last year and have had 2 sets of pads, thats it, built like a tank.

Is the tax going up on these this year or are they £210 a year?

different trucks different tax class according to some here, mines 210 but really its DVLA and .gov you need to look to for tax bands

How reliable have they been for you and are the parts expensive?

ultra reliable, ran for six months with a goosed head, 3 pots/valves cracked just kept going, service it regular and its the biz, parts don't seem overly expensive if you use the firms on here, toyota are hit n miss as far as expense goes.

I'd make sure you fit a transmission oil cooler and service the coolant system completely before doing any towing whatsoever, I was towing a 2 ton caravan which blew the head due to the crappy coolant system, the fan is a big problem imo as you don't realise its not working properly till the heads gone, new uprated silicone oil is the cure, but there's too much plumbing on these trucks in the first place, which, coupled with a temperature guage that is total crap and a stat that fails closed and you have a problem, the oil cooler and other parts I mention need doing before you put a hitch on these mothers, ignore this at your peril.
