[question] 2nd gen solid front axle

I've got 15x10 rims right now, will I need wider rims? I'll probably need 12" wide rims wont I

I am running 15x 10 .... but if you go wider it will be more stable


And you may need to extent the wheel arches and wheel spacers

Hi thanks for all the replies.
I've seen a leaf sprung 4runner solid axle. The same shape as a 2nd gen surf. Would this be cheaper and easier than a coil sprung setup? I would rather go the easier route even if it was more expensive (I'd favour easy over cost).

2.5k sounds a bit much though but I suppose thats the maximum?

When you say you are doing it yourself, do you need any special equipment? If they are willing I would rather / or may ask Mark or Tony to do the work (if they are willing!)

Lastly, I'm guessing there would be more room for a V8? And the rear would need more lift right?

What is your main goal, off-road ability or just looks?

I'm guessing it's just the look you are after as you wouldn't want a tatty looking off-roader??

If you dont get matching width axles it will track badly round corners and be unstable .

If you dont get matching width axles it will track badly round corners and be unstable .

Just fit wheel spacers on the front.

Leaf springs ride like hell on bumps, I can't keep up with the 2nd Gens on the rough tracks around the Plains at speed in the 1st gen without shaking the thing to bits.

The only reason to fit a solid front axle is to get more flex offroad, which makes for a floppy on road truck.

Stick with the IFS unless you building a monster Rockcrawler. Get a 4" suspension lift, along with your body lift, then diff drop and extra coil spacers if you want to run 35's on a daily driver.

I liked the flexy rear coils (although I did fit 1" spacers to bring it up a bit more) and the 2 others I've fitted have been spot on for fit, the Procomp kit needed a little fettling, but comes with front crossmember support struts that the Superlift kits dosn't (but you can get them for extra I think)

Others are all virtually the same in design, there arn't many other ways of doing it.

I've only ever seen Procomp and Superlift, Procomp seem to have stiffer rear coils (as in height, but I wanted flex), but I think the Superlift shocks are better.

They are very expensive kits, but like I've said in other posts, my aligment has has always been spot on, wishbone angles completely stock so no extra stress on steering ball joints and idler.

Another advantage is you can then do all the other front lift tricks and in theory get pushing 6"'s or so of front lift if your feeling adventurous. (and front prop splines can take it! ) before even adding Body lift.

Maybe, Bearmach are Procomp offical importers now, I've still not got round to chatting to them yet, but they have supplied Surf Shocks to someone recently that they left in their truck for me to fit.

LA Supertrux supplied my Superlift kits, but obviously they arn't officially around anymore.

Chris (truckarms) personaly imported the Procomp kit I fitted to his truck, and it was back here last week and still drives nice and looks 'pert' after 2 years-ish.
