  • Which one to buy...?

Hi everyone. I have previously owned two superb surf's, both 2.4td, one 1992 other 1993.

I am now in the situation where i am able to buy another.

What i am looking for is peoples recomendations of which model, year, engnine etc to buy, pros and cons etc...

    I have £4000 to spend.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Happy Surfing!

Depends on what you're going to use it for.

I'd buy, if I could find one for the right money, a double cab pick up.

Or an 80 series Land Cruiser, a 4.2 Turbo diesel or at the very least a 3.0 Surf... I wouldn't want a petrol and I'd prefer an auto, but that's just me.

Been stuck behind or had to tow too many petrol motors out of the water, I know you can do a lot to "waterproof" a petrol, but it's always the petrol ones that have trouble.

When I had my 2.4 I always hankered after the power of my petrol Jeep, but couldn't bring myself to get another. The 3.0 has loads of power and returns the same mpg as the 2.4.

Apparently the 2.7 and 3.4 are 'coil on plug' so don't suffer as much as the HT distributor trucks.

The 3.0 is a slow dog compared to the 2.7 - I've had both.

I dunno, maybe I'll change my mind if I sink it halfway up the doors as I did with my 2nd gen - we'll see. However, as 95% of my time is spent on tarmac (and I suspect most others are the same) the petrol engine is a MUCH nicer drive - and more economical into the bargain.

Yep, all the ignition parts are higher than the air filter.

It takes very little water to kill an electrical circuit, you'd need to suck up a lot to do it via the air inlet. It doesn't have to be on the ignition side either. There are more vital and sensitive electrical circuits on a petrol, a damp air flow meter for example can stop an engine and you only need a slight hiccup to leave you stuck in the middle of some water.

My truck would break the speed limit on every road in the UK if I needed it to, it gets there quick enough for me, and has adequate grunt for the rough stuff.

Only if you could overtake the tractor in front of you though

Vive le difference. Wouldn't do if we were all the same

I am wanting the truck for some green laning, for a roof tent and for my fishing gear. Is not going to be used daily.

I have been looking at numerous trucks on fleabay and the trader, 2.7 petrols and 3.0TD's. What I need to know is it worth paying the extra 1k+ for the diesel? And which model is the most reliable.

My old 2.4's both had heads but after they were done they never had any other problems at all... are any of the other engines susceptible to problems like this...?

I think the question whether the diesel is worth £1k more than the petrol truck is a personal choice.

I would have gone for the diesel had I not tried a petrol. Now I have, I'd find the diesel a bit noisy and coarse. But then, I'd never considered an auto box until I drove my 2nd gen 3.0! Now I'd never have another manual outside of a sports car.

As for 'actual value' - no, the diesel is NOT worth more than the petrol version. The reason they are currently cheaper is because they are relatively new to the UK market, and that puts people off. If you have a read around the other forums (outside of the UK, and car modification forums) it seems that there are no common issues with the 3RZ-FE (the 2.7) and tuners out there use it as the basis for 1000bhp+ racing engines!

Reliability between the 3.0 and 2.7? They're all fairly old trucks, but they're both Toyota.

                        I'd buy a Hilux D4D.

I'd go for the Diesel purely on the grounds of spares availability and cost. It will cost you about 3 or 4 times as much to maintain a 2.7 petrol than it would to look after the 3.0 diesel.
