  • Tyres for ICE

Can anyone suggest a semi spiked tyre that can be used in tje uk for driving on ice?

  • #2
(metal) Spiked tyres are illegal for use in the UK, except when required. You would have to take them off and put them back on all the time. Your best bet is winter tyres, which grip much better but will wear out more quickly than a normal tyre.

They would cost more than the surf for a set.
If its not broke don't fix it.

        Snow chains should suffice.

I have a set of really good BFG's on which have never let me down in the snow.

Any tyre wont grip on a smooth surface though when driving up and down hill
I only use the surf in bad weather conditions.

Thats why I was curious about specific tyres for ice

          Thanks peoples:-#)

Make your own with some old radials and a rivet gun with penny washers.

Look for a tyre with lots of siping (cuts in the tread blocks) Winter spec tyres have them.

Most 4x4 A/T's are M+S (mud and snow) so all have them to a degree. But M/T's often don't even though they have M+S moulded on the side.

BFG A/T's are very good in the ice due to this feature, but they are just as good the rest of the year to. Meaning you don't need to bugger around changing tyres.

I had to order my snowtrac 3 tires from France and even they cant get them back in stock now!

                        Ohh no

Bugger, I can find the rivets but not the gun!

                        Dam it!

suppose ill have to stay with the MT AT's on their then.

Thought their might have been something a bit more suited to the job. :-(

Just lay the rivets on the road in a couple of lines and drive over them until they all stick - then any you miss can do your neighbours cars too and you'll be mr popular!
