Perhaps the reporter was using the generic (yankee and often admonished by Albannach) word for any 4x4 vehicle.

Must have been a Surf and a Landrover. It says there was two 4x4's and two ambulances. Think about it, the Landy would have tried the hill, broke or got stuck half way up. The Surf would have then driven up the hill with the paramedics, picked up the mum to be, and then on the way back rescued the Landy. At the bottom of the hill, the first ambulance would have taken the mum to be, and the second would have dealt with the Landy driver who would have been in shock after being rescued by the Toyota!! Simples!!
