3rd Gen 4 Wheel Drive Advice Please

Greetings fellow hairdressers! I'd like some help with the 4wd system on my 3rd gen please.

On the old 2nd gen I simply pressed the 4wd button and a light on the dash showed 4wd and that was that.

However on the 3rd gen things light up and flash and I'm a little confused as to what is actually happening.

There is a picture of the 4 wheels with a circle in the middle of it. When I press the 4wd button these flash on and off and then stay illuminated, the same when I disengage 4wd but sometimes they flash for a while before going out, is this normal?

Yep, thats normal Jim, mine does the same.

When you press the 4wd button, all four green 'wheel' icons should illuminate.
This is 4WD but open centre diff, so it's effectively AWD and can be used on dry roads if you wish.

All four green lights plus the centre orange light means 4WD centre diff locked, this is now the same as the 2nd gen, so don't use on dry roads.

Yes, it's normal - they flash (all 4 wheels and the centre diff) when engaging or dis-engaging 4wd. Sometimes this takes a while... Doesn't seem to like engaging when on the gas, have also ready coasting in Neutral or engaging it whist applying fair bit of steering lock help.

The 3rd Gen Surf has a multi-mode 4wd system.It may be used in 2wd Hi-ratio, driven by the rear wheels only, 4wd Hi-ratio with an open centre differential. 4wd Hi-ratio with the centre differential locked and 4wd Lo-Ratio with the centre differential locked.

H2: Rear wheel drive only: Normal operation, best for less wear & tear on components, best fuel economy & performance.

H4: 4 wheels driven, open centre differential: Press button on side of 4wd selector. 4 wheel Indicator will illuminate in centre of dash when fully engaged. You may select/deselect this mode at speeds up to 100Kph. May be used anytime extra traction is desired.

H4L: 4 wheels driven, centre differential locked: Move 4wd-selector lever fully back (position of button on side not important), 4 wheel Indicator and centre diff light will illuminate in centre of dash when fully engaged. You may select/deselect this mode at speeds up to 5Kph. Must only be used on loose surfaces such as mud, snow etc.

L4L: 4 wheels driven, centre differential locked, Lo-Ratio engaged: 4 wheel Indicator and centre diff light will illuminate in centre of dash when fully engaged. Select neutral on main gearbox, move 4wd selector-lever fully back, push to the right and then forwards.

Yeah, that's a real novelty. The 2nd gen was either hot or cold!

I'm using a manual 5speed 1990 2.0 ltr surf with a L4-N-H shifter.Wanted to know if i use the H it wont do any harm on my ADD differential and will gain more speed? The top speed i'm getting for now is 100 km/h. Never been tried to use the 4wd coz i'm was confuse and worry that might cause any damage. Bought this truck here in the Philippines.

I've found that if the lights flash for more than a couple of seconds I don't have the wheels straight, or I haven't moved enough (usually only a couple of meters, and not all the time; sometimes it locks in without moving).
