Nearly got caught out green lanin'

Was driving near somewhere local and came across a "Public Byway" sign - first one I've seen in the area, so thought I'd have a look. It was narrow, but nothing different to the easy ones we did in somewherelse, so I set off down it.

First alarm bells should have been no tyre tracks, just one track, and no diff dragging line either...

second alarm bells should have been the tree in the middle of the track, I got around it though and carried on.

Bear in mind I had passed trees VERY CLOSE on both sides which had brushed the surf, so reversing was not really an option...

pressed on, knowing I could only go one way... thinking I might be making a phone call to one of our surf owning friends for a REALLY BIG favour....

Carried on and it open up slightly into bushes either side, but still no sign of tyres tracks...

Eventually the track narrowed, I got out and walked the path, yes it was now a path. It dod not get any wider....

Ended up reversing quite a way, before finding some soft bushes to do a 20 point turn, just.
I didn't damage anything, I merely reversed up to them...

And then to top it all a very nice and understanding horse riding gentleman appeared in the direction I was now heading and explained to me I was on a bridleway.
"It says it's a byway" I said, He calmly replied that the byway ended 100 yrds up from where I got stuck.
He was right, but it was not clear at all - there were no signs to indicate the change in classification. we both smiled and wished each other good day. I was embarrased, he was happy to have given someone some vital information.

So, lesson learnt, do NOT go anywhere unclear, or unknown without another driver....
And maybe check the local maps first!

Hindsights a wonderful thing! Seat of your pants "lets see what happens" is much more fun ( read danger)

Lol. I've been there done that mate. But not on my own. Luckily had someone else with me . Narrow lane getting narrower to just a footpath lol.

and you want to hope that the soft bushers you found are common bushes and not rare ones or even worse protected bushes
maybe crashed a few rare and protected plants too

be very carfull when out off roading anyway
be even more carefull if your unsure on weathers its legal or not
if unsure dont go
walk it first

second thing i would say to you
if you make a fek up like that (lots do)
you saying basicly is this
i went down the said path and made lots of criminal damage
i did not mean to but still it was cold and i could not be bothered to walk down and have a look
so i made a mess left damaged bushs trees and plant
and you even name the place

not only is this type of thing giving us 4x4ers a bad name
your asking for it arnt you
you can get done for the damage you did
so why tell every one were it was?

what people dont realise is that billions is spent every year just trying to protect ower wild life
most have no idea how rare most of it is

i did say that in my first post
would you all be better off if i say nothing and leave him to addmit on a public forum that he was the 4x4 that damaged the said path?

lets say on that path they could be anything growing there
is he a flower plant trees and bushes expert?
if not how can any one say what may have been damaged or not?

thats all iam doing pointing out the facts
alot of places have been shut because it only takes one person to find a rare flower tree bush or insect
if proved that damage is a prospect then its shut even to walkers
