I want my Gen 3 to move a bit quicker or more correctly be a bit more driveable on the roads round about me....

So far it has a powerflow exhaust, cone filter and a remap and some funny blue anodised thing with three outlets strapped into a piece of pipe near the bulkhead, EGR mod has also been done. Anyone know what the blue thing could be? Previous owner tells me that the boost was not increased by the place that did the remap.

What else can realistically be done without buggering up fuel consumtion or placing undue strain on the rest of the engine?

A bit of digging around on Australian sites has turned up a few things and I'm just looking for some opinions before I start playing with anything.

Seen this, makes sense but expensive so would look to get one fabricated by a local firm if possible
    http://www.eng-tek.com.au/product_in...roducts_id=268

Do things such as aftermarket manifolds exist for this engine?

Other thing I have looked at is one of those plug in chip things, but all of these appear to only increase fueling without changing anything else so not convinced, timing would surely have to be altered too to get best effect. Has anyone fitted an aftermarket ECU to a Surf or know of anywhere that may be able to tweak the standard ECU a bit further?

Other thing is an intercooler, is it worth fitting one and how much insinvolved?

    Cheers

    Ben

Remove about 750 kg of weight from wherever you can, seats, carpets, a/c, front diff etc, fit skinny tyres, take off all accesories, external mirrors, spoilers etc, tape up panel gaps, lower suspension, and take of side steps.
You'll find your surf is now pretty responsive!
Seriously though our 15 year old oilers don't lend themselves easily to high power outputs, and the evidence is there - ie NO mods available...
Put down the pipe and start dreaming instead about a nice V8, burning proper fuel, 'tis the only way!
And yes, when I get some funds together I'm gonna get myself on that waiting list!

Get you injectors cleaned or upgraded, as you already have the exhaust and airfilter.
Intercoolers are really easy to install, they fit between the turbo and throttle body. All you need is the 'cooler and some silicone bends. They give a bit more grunt especially when overtaking or up hills.

When you say get the injectors upgraded, what is there out there that I could fit as an upgrade?

The only experience I have of tuning things is normally aspirated A series engines and that was a long time ago, changing thexhaust & fiter on those engines gives good results but much better results when the manifolds are also changed hence the question about after market manifolds.

The only mods I have seen seem to be Aussie bolt ons and very few of them too. Not really wanting to go the V8 route, for some sick reason I want to try to take what I have and make it better!!

        Cheers

Same here, I 'cut my teeth' working on A series engines David Vizard was my hero.

TonyN has uprated injectors fitted I believe, give him a shout.

              Remember these guys? http://www.oselli.com/engines_aseries

Used them a few times back in the early eighties. They've grown a bit since then though.

My 1KZTE has a Bobbox chip unit. I fitted it and increased the boost by a few PSI. The chip unit is adjustable - I just increased fuelling until it started producing black smoke on WOT/max load, then turned it back a bit to minimise smoke. It does produce more power/torque but it does use more fuel if you use that extra power. Diesel tuning is not like tuning petrol engines. Power is directly related to amount of fuel burnt. As the intake air is not throttled there is very little gains to be had by trying to improve breathing efficiency. Playing with inlets and exhausts may move the RPM where peak torque is produced but ultimate HP seems little effected. You can increase peak power by increasing fuel flow upto the point where it can't all be burnt during the power stroke. Once you go past this point you just get more black smoke! You can burn more fuel by upping the boost (supplying more O2). Finally you hit the overboost protection limit (about 13PSI) and that's the limit. Sort of. You can bleed off pressure to the pressure sensor, so showing it a lower value than actual intake pressure. However, which ever way you go more power = more heat generated.
In short, as far as I know, you can up the power of the the 1KZTE, but anything worthwhile (as in noticeable on the road) is going to adversely effect fuel consumption and engine longevity.
Personally, my opinion would be: enjoy your Surf for what it is. If it's not quick enough, do an engine transplant or buy a different vehicle.

PS: if, as standard, your Surf does not produce black smoke at full load do not bother upping boost pressure. You will only reduce power due to increased pumping losses. You have to increase fuelling to match boost - the boost compensator can only do so much.

Bugger me! That was a long post using a phone.

I had my copy of Custom car confiscated by my technical drawing teacher, the issue with 'Roaring Rat' on the cover. 10 points if you can remember what car that was.

The only Rat engined car I can remember from then was RATZ, a 280ZX based Bracket Racer. But it was the mid to late 80s. I think I recognise the name, but I can't think of the car; I could Google it, but that would be cheating!

Ben_D: As a starting point, how much extra HP/Lbft do you feel you would need to make you happy with your Surf? Also, how much money would you be prepared to spend? This info' would allow a more focused discussion.
