If you still cant get online, download winsock fix on another computer, save it to a USB stick and run it on the problem machine.

Cheers neil, thats basically the same fix as Rbaz sent me !
Done what it said, now its downloading updates for everything so presumably i can get IE to work when it's finished faffing about!
(hasn't been used online for quite a while so theres a lot of em)
