Harder and more expensive than doing nothing if you dont need to.

If you're going for muds to look 'ard, then go for it, but if your mates aren't doing anything any better than you, why spend the money?

In 7 years of ownership of my old 2nd gen, I started with the BFG ATs that came with it, I went through three different types of mud tyre (Kumho x 2, and some really wild Maxxis muds) and ended up back on BFG ATs. I only ever green laned (though some pretty technical, scary ones at times) and I'm not in to P&P, but the BFGs never let me down and were so much nicer as a daily driver.

na it's because i burst one of my AT's when we did Chapelgate last wk, and had to put on my spare (which isnt BFG although similar tread (Firestone i think)) so i just thought i may as well 'make it better' off road by putting muds on, either that or will still have to buy 2 new AT's for the front

Unless you're hammering pay and play, you dont need muds. You certainly wont need them for green laning in the UK. If you need mud tyres and would get stuck on ATs, you are probably risking having the trail closed due to moaning by the bobble hatted tw@ts, as you're probably tearing up the trail.
There are some excellent mountain bike routes around work which have been ruined by clowns on trials motorbikes digging 2 ft deep ruts into the track, so your cranks foul on the sides. They are pretty much clay traps now. I don't begrudge these chaps having their fun but last time I looked they were illegal to ride on bridleways.

I have pretty much gone anywhere that my mates - with mud's - have gone on my normal AT's but, surely getting the MT's will only make it better?

The main reason MTs are better than ATs is because the greater gaps in the tread mean they are better at clearing the mud from their tread and therefore still have grip rather than the compacted mud turning them into slicks.

Are you sure they're not BOATs, Byway Open To All Traffic rather than bridleways?
