  • Auto gear lever / ignition key sticking problem

After chaging the bulb in the auto gear lever on my LN130 yesterday I found that the mechanism that prevents the ignition key being removed from the ignition while the truck is in gear isn't working properly.

When in "park" once the gear lever is, to use the technical term, tw@tted a few times it seems to release the offending part of the mechanism and the ignition key can be removed from the ignition.

Obviously, I'd rather not have to live with this problem day-in, day-out, so if anyone can offer advice on where the problem may lie I'd welcome anything helpful!

Alternatively, if anyone has workshop manual diagrams or whatever they could share that would be equally as useful for me to try and sort it out too.

    Thanks in advance folks!

The shift lock shares the same circuit as the stoplights.
Make sure both stoplights are working before you delve any deeper.

Thanks for that - stop lights aren't working.

I'll check the fuse in a minute (assuming I can find it!)

EDIT: Checked the fuse and it looked ok so put it back into the fuse box (in the drivers side foot panel) and the stop lights are working fine. I think they were probably working in the first place and I just didn't see them cos I wasn't leaning far enough out from the truck to see them!

Couple more things you can do...
Adjust the throw of the shift lever by adjusting the nut where the shift lever meets the horizontal rod that connects to the transmission. There's a slot in the rod that allows for adjustment if the shift lever won't go into 'P' properly.
Or try removing and re-inserting the multiplug at the end of the rod on the transmission. This plug is the for gear position switch. It might be just dirty causing an intertmittant connection.

Of course it could be something really easy like a bad connection of one of the plugs at the base of the shift lever from when you disturbed them.

Thanks for the help Mr B. I'll have a look at things in the week sometime (& pray that I can keep on getting the keys out of the ignition!)

Out of interest - I've turned up a useful .pdf for this subject for anyone searching the forum in the future.

            Sticking Ignition Key

I had this problem last year, and thought it was an electrical relay, it turned out to be the stop nut had gone out of adjustment. When it is correctly adjusted, the key can be removed both in P and N.
The test to find this problem is to wait until the key sticks, make sure you have your Radio reset code, and then remove the negative earth lead on your batteries. If you can now remove the key, then the stop nut is the culprit. If the key stays in then the lock barrel needs attention.

Could I make a suggestion that this post becomes a 'stickie' as I have seen several posts regarding this problem, and our Surfs are not getting any younger

                Stuck key

As in Bushwhackers post above mine, the auto gear lever when pushed into Park rests against this adjustment. Remove the centre consul between the seats and carefully remove over the levers. Then look where the gear lever butts up against.

Righto - I'm assuming you mean the bit that clicks in and out when the brake pedal is pressed? (Sorry if this seems a somewhat inane question - I just want to be 100% certain what you're talking about).

You can also look at the 'Shift Lock Controller' Module.

Sits right next to the gear selector under the centre console. This is the relay that controls the solenoid when your foot is on the brake.

When this goes you can only use the 'red' button to move out of park.

When mine went it turned to be this can completely blown and had blown both rear bulbs.

When replaced all 3 all worked fine

                      Matt

That looks absolutely cracking mate. I'll have a look at it in the morning - it's starting to go dark now!
