Maybe a 2.4 would be ideal after all?

i own a 92 2.4 and it's the first surf i've owned, i've had my fair share of cars and landrovers and i've worked on more vehicles than i care to remember and like any secondhand vehicle i've gone through it and gradually repaired/replaced anything that isn't up to scratch, i've also read a lot of the sticky's on the forum
for common faults and, with the info i've checked everything and ended up spending quite a bit to get the truck upto my own expectations, as it happens i bought the truck for £730 with 6wks mot and no tax i checked over the truck before the test and it wanted tyres and number plates these were done, ok the tyres were used but they only cost £30 for the four she sailed the mot no advisories either, since then i've serviced it (full service) fitted FWH and stainless exhaust, wind deflectros, mirrored side and rear windows, new radiator and viscous hub service plus aftermarket temperature and boost gauge upto know my truck stands me at £1000 all in
i have to admit i do like my truck but if a known good 3ltr engine come up then i would seriously consider the engine swap but, if it doesn't then i'll carry on with the 2.4 and keep her going as long as possible or until i win the lottery then i'll look for a third gen or a very good late 2nd gen

If I bought another 2.4, I'd get one with the head done. They're old and the heads will go with time, as will the 3.0s. It's not a brilliant engine, but it works and will move you along at a fair rate once it's got going. Don't avoid like the plague, but be careful.

Gotta go with Gra says, Given I've now had a 3 litre for 2n half years n no real probs yet, gotta go some to match my ole 2.4, 6 n half years n near perfect, even a little under powered....
                      NOT all 2.4's were problematic

IMHO 90% of faults are through neglect, Yes some are general wear and tear ie tyres and brakes and such but major mechanical failure is rare if properly serviced and maintained, in the time i've been maintaining my own vehicles i have not had a breakdown, but i bought a mercedes 320 sportline in lancashire and the car got as far as birmingham before it broke down nothing too major it had blown the top hose from the top of the radiator, i didn't have any tools or water (stupid i know) and like an idiot i believed what i had been told about the car as it was bought from a friend, anyhow once the car was relayed home i replaced the hose give the car a once over and started using it and never had any trouble with it. when i buy a second hand car i always change oil, filters, timing belt and basically go through and check everything else and if i find anything that i'm not happy with or looks past it's best it gets replaced.
The other way i keep an eye on whats happening is to keep a record of the vehicles fuel consumption as this will usually be the first thing to suffer in the event of a problem occuring usually before it's picked up any other way

Gotta agree with Gra aswell on this one.I bought his old 2.4 and drove it home 200 odd miles and to be honest it was one of the best 2.4's i have ever driven. It was on 33's if i remember rightly and i couldn't fault the truck at all.Just a shame so many people wanted parts from it and i broke it for parts. It was a couple of years back when the prices i think were right down on surfs so it wasn't worth me trying to sell it as a runner

I'm not saying the 2.4s are problematic, or bad motors. I love mine and intend to keep it until she dies. But the 3.0 are IMHO so much better, it's not about going quickly (it's a 2tonne truck with the aerodynamics of a brick), the 3.0 has the power to pull the truck and anything else without stress.

Knowing what I know now, I would go for the 3.0 as it's better. There are plenty of them around and at reasonable prices.
                            Why settle for second best?
                            Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

because second best usually means cheaper and usually more readily available as i found out before i found this site and the advice thats available oh well hidsights a wonderful thing
