  • F.A.O Ava Banana....

Just trying to make contact with you cos I understand you had a narrow-bodied KZN185 similar to mine?

Just wanted to ask what size wheels and tyres you had on it?

I'm lead to believe all KZN185s had 16" wheels and originally 265/70 tyres, whereas I seem to have 15" alloys and 215/80 tyres.

If you ran something bigger did you have any rubbing/ clearance issues?

    Ta muchly

He has 15" on his truck & you can go bigger with no problems.

I think its the very very early 3rd gens that have 15" & im not too sure but i think yours doesn't have the multi-mode 4WD so DON'T drive in 4WD on dry roads or you will bugga the transmission.

Not heard from AVA for a while "hope he's ok"
If its not broke don't fix it.

Ta muchly - saw the pics of his truck and it looked like he was running something bigger. If he's on 15" wheels, curious to know what size tyre he's on.

How can you tell if it's got 'multi-mode' 4WD?

Well my 4WD selector doesn't have that many options. Thus I can conclude I don't have the 'multi-mode' 4WD system and will refrain from engaging 4WD on the road.

Unless it's inches deep in snow n ice that is.

Curious as to why my configuration would lead to a knackered transmission though. Appreciate it's not good form to trundle around everywhere in 4WD, but why would me selecting 4WD on the move cause grief when the multi-mode wouldn't?

on the multi modes there is a centre diff whereas on yours and the 2nd gens there is no centre diff

Thanks for the info - learning more and more each day. It helps confirm that I really do have a hybrid 2nd/3rd gen thing going on.

Which makes it interesting/awkward when it comes to ordering stuff for my truck. Why do I do this......!

                  Yeh - but do I order for a KZN130 or a KZN185?

Planning on taking a run over to see Tony at 4x4toys next week. Think it's easiest to let the pros decipher what bits n bobs are needed when it comes to servicing!

Just give them your chassis number.

Check what is on the VIN plate under the bonnet....mine said KZN185.

                      And hello everyone!!

sorry haven't been around for a while.....but changed jobs and had to sell the Surf

Now got a company car (new vauxhall insignia) and wish I had the surf again. Trying to pursuade the mrs that her car needs to be a 4x4. I loved my surf and miss it. (Although I am tempted to try a 90 Defender just for the experience you understand).
