hey im paul and i live near inverness in scotland. ive got a modified vw passat just now but getting rid of it tomorrow as im after a hilux surf. mainly for all the extra space and with me living in the mountains along dirt forest tracks im in desperate need of a nice 4x4...im also after some advice on buying a hilux surf. ive found a nice one. 1992 2.4td (2nd gen if im right?) 67k miles jap imort. real clean body work and not a spot of rust underneath. no sign of damage or respray (im also a spray painter) apart from just a small ding on the front of the bonnet where he was honest and said he pushed down on it to close it.

i have read all the buying advice in another section but i heard somewhere that the 2.4's have been known for more problems compared to any of the other models. any help would be amazing. cheers

The 3 litre's were supposed to be the safest bet compared to the 2.4's for the cylinder head's going but a lot of the 3's including mine have been going lately so I reckon its just bad luck if you get one and it suffers. Apart from that they are a very capable truck and are more car like to drive if you get my drift. The things to keep on top of are the cooling system if you buy one, flush and change the coolant, fit an aftermarket temp guage as the cars one is ridiculously useless, new thermostat/rad cap and do the viscous fan oil, all writups are on here so do a search, the only other thing is if your going to tow anything with the truck fit an oil cooler too as I think this has caused a lot to overheat, blowing the heads.
