Thanks for all the comments and thanks, at least this time wasn't as bad to fix as last time as at least I now have daily backups of the site so only had to revert a few days to before the hacking attempt. And actually will take some of the pain as a positive because it finally got me to pull my finger out and think about updating the site software - it's been running like this for quite a few years now and the web has moved on and there are lots of cool new things that we may be able to take advantage of. Should be able to make things easier for Koi and I to keep things up to date and secure.

I just wish though that the hackers would go and get a life, it's not like we've got anything better to do than keep rebuilding the site.

Oh and Jimster, yep CAPTCHA for everything will be on the cards although we have also just implemented a stop spam module on the registration process which seems to work quite good too - automates the checking of bad email addresses and IP addresses and rejects registration from known offenders.

Our bass player is a web designer and also has hosting packages, he's managed to keep his forum running for about 9 years on his carpet site I think he must have had it hacked something like 30 times but next to no problems in the last 18 months and he basicaly did what your talking about.

And when the site is hacked...which i presume is a different thing, what is the purpose of that...always wondered.

Well in simple terms SPAM tends to be about spreading a message - advert or something like that and is also used to spread viruses by getting you to click on a link or visit a site which will spread malicious code - however that is a very high level view, there are loads of variations and the grabbing of information - Phishing can be spread by SPAM messaging, emails, forum posts etc.

Now Hacking on the other hand, well there are as many reasons are there are attempts - from simple just Computer Geek trying to see if they can to cyber terrorism, to spreading of malicious code, to getting out dodgy copies of videos, to Phishing to grabbing users IDs for various purposes.

Both of the last attempts have been around spreading dodgy copies of videos it seems - seems harmless but could get us shut down.

A lot of SPAM and Hacking is just Computer nerds but a lot more is organised crime of some kind, a lot coming in from Russia and China and some parts of Eastern Europe. The busier the site, the more of a temptation it is to hc or Spam it, quicker getting the message / attack or whatever out there.
