    It's a timing chain on the 2.7.
    I have learned a lot today :-)

What's it like to change ? Should the guy avoid it and go for the 1998 intercooled 3 ltr. ?

Personally I like the intercooled one, but the 2.7 would be slightly more efficient I think.
If it can be broken it can be fixed

My daily drag is 10 miles each way, no opportunity to exceed 60 mph. However, I do go mountain biking and I would hope any of these are up to a 2-3 hour motorway stint every month, without the head looking like Freddy Krueger's face at the end of it.

Am I being unreasonable? I thought the 3.0 diesel lump was gold as long as it's serviced properly.

Should never need changing, unless the engine has done an intergalactic milage and the chain is noisy.
They also have COP ignition (individual coils on each sparkplug) which are at the very top of the engine so wading in rivers shouldn't be an issue either.

2 mins from M1 J26. I've seen some clean 3rd gens around here but nothing ever seems to come up for sale in this neck of the woods.
