I've seen a Colorado listed as Cat D repaired for a very good price (about £1.5k - £2k less than book for its age, 1999) so rang the dealer to ask what was damaged.

He told me plastic over-bumper, passenger side wing and passenger side headlight. from photos it looks clean, and he *tells* me the paint is a good match - you cant see its been painted. He reckons it was due to a slide on snow into a fence post last winter.

Should he have documentation for the repairs, or is there no legal requirement to do so for Cat D?

I appreciate that being registered as Cat D can make them hard to sell on (hence the price) but would probably keep it anyhow, as I regretted selling the Surf I had for 7 years the second the tail lights went out of view!!

I found a bike going cheap, cat D, was immaculate till I inquired about insurance, cheapest quote was 800, rising to 1700, for a full license holder of 28 years, basically they want a new owner to give them cashback on what they paid out, I'd check yours first before buying. H

quite a few people here have repaired cat d write offs to their Surfs after a small shunt, DaveHMS is one, drop them a PM or bump this thread a few times, don't recall them ever having to many problems getting insurance.

What do you know about the 3.4 V6 Tony - other than being jucier than the 3.0TD?

A tidy one of those for sale about 15 miles from here at what seems to be a good price. Tempted to go and have a look but I have this irrational fear of petrol engine complexity

They can be, yes. There's a few about that have been but they are obviously pricier.

Not that bothered about the mpg because I dont do huge miles. I just dont know a thing about that engine, though a google about it doesn't appear to throw up any more horror stories than the 3.0TD does!

Must admit, the smoothness of a V6 appeals too, and being coil on plug ignition, shouldn't be *that* hard to waterproof a bit...

I've heard they are very good engine, especially over the old 3.0 in the 2nd Gens, if I was looking for a 3rd Gen I'd try one with no hesitation. Never worked on one in the flesh though, only the I4 2.7's, which are very nice as well.

You really don't want to be a passenger on the 16th, do you?

Don't rush into anything as the 16th will come and go and you'll have to live with the motor you buy long after that.

I wont be taking it offroad then anyhow. It's on road tyres at the mo. 2" lift and BFG ATs and it'll be ready to go - assuming I buy it!

I always fancied one. Only thing is I wanted a manual at the time and they don't exist. There's a TRD supercharger for that engine too.....

I wanted an auto, and this one is.

Yeah, supercharger a popular mod I wont be entertaining. As is twin turbos apparently. I sh1t myself up with 2 litres and one turbo, why would I want 3.4 litres and two turbos?!?!
