I think all the helpful posts on this forum have just iterated the logic is skewed. I've emailed the policeman dealing with it again to state some facts.

I know this thread is tiring some people. I didn't want it to go on as long as it has to be honest but it just has. So sorry about that.

On a plus side, I've paid my subs and can receive PMs once again!
      Oh Nana, what's my name?

      • It's a good thread.

My previous post was just to highlight the stupidity of the police's statement - If they were your wheels (which they were) then they now belong to the insurance company regardless of whether he "bought" them as they were stolen in the first place.

If I was to buy a stolen car - it would be taken away

This is what I said, but apparently not. If you buy a stolen car and did not know it was stolen you can go to court to legally obtain it back again from the true legal owner.

Really? I've watched no end of those police programs where a car get called in for inspection when new owner tries to tax it, they tell them its stolen and take it off them!

                          • I think if the insurance has paid out, the new "owner" can approach the ins company and make an offer to purchase (again) but has no legal right to ownership. I also think its offered back to the origional owner to purchase off them first, so the guy who bought off the theif has a very slim chance of keeping it
What have I told you about thinking Erroll

                            • Yeah, thats a more sensible way of doing it. (so must be wrong!! ) Better than losing everything if you have innocently bought something stolen and the Insurance has already paid out original owner.

                              • It is the sensible way to do it, but as you say; that would be too simple.

I've made many, many, beer tokens buying and selling stolen then recovered goods. On-line auctions buggered up that particular cash cow though.
