EGR again

I put a thread in last week, didnt really get it right?
I blocked the EGR with the ball bearing about 18mths ago, never really noticed anything, anyway a couple of months ago quite a bit off smoke on start up and general running, so gave it a mini service and problem sorted. last week I was poking around under the bonnet and noticed the pipework from the EGR connected to the manifold was not connected?? I somehow must have pulled it off! re-connected and to my annoyance a lot more smoke.
it runs better and hardly no smoke?? I know its sucking clean air, but will this damage the engine??

I doubt you "somehow pulled it off" I had to grind mine off even after the cylinder head was removed, or, if your referring to the rubber pipework (vac pipes) then removing these would just close or open the valve permanent, I made up plates and blanked off both ends when I did the head but left all the gubbins in place so it looks stock, which imo is the best way. H
