  • The perfect allround Surf

Since I am resurrecting the dead 2.4, I figured in for a penny, in for a pound (well many many hundreds of pounds actually... D'oh!).
I'd love to say money is no object, but unless a very particular series of brightly coloured balls falls out of a big plastic can this weekend, sadly that ain't the case!
But since it is going to have a reborn engine, I figure a) I would like to extend the life of the result as much as possible, and b) get all the work that I possibly can done whilst it is in surgery.
I realise that the ideal rather depends on what the truck is to be used for. This is not going to be a hard core mudplugger. I want to do some off roading, but it also needs to be a practical day to day vehicle as well - and my wife won't stand for having to use a ladder to climb in (even though she'll have her Surf to use most of the time!!!). So 6" lifts are out. It has to be something I can climb into in suited and booted in the mornings, take for longish motorway trips, get filled up with hay and crap in the back and generally be useful around the farm, and then sometimes go playing and get muddy. Oh and obviously it has to look like a beast, just for the hell of it .
    Tall order?
Here are my thoughts so far of things that would be options. Obviously then need to weigh up costs and prioritise. Would love to hear all ideas/suggestions though.
Engine - Bushwhacker Lexurf - no question.
Brakes/suspension - Will be 2" body lift. As I said don't want more than that, this isn't going to be a monster truck (actually, might consider 2" suspension lift too if someone can persuade me there is a point in it). Not sure what other brake or suspension upgrade options are realistic/possible/beneficial, but would love to improve braking, and perhaps reduce roll a touch.
Other mechanical - what would people swap out/replace/upgrade to extend life and improve reliability given the option?
Boots - 31" and alloys - will refurb existing alloys off my Burgundy 3.
Body - all black spray job (hopefully just needs bottom/arches doing - at the moment is black over silver but with awful stickers on)
Bull bar - will use wrap-around off Burgundy 3L with spots.
Light bar - 4 rectangular spots under roof bar.
Lights generally - bulb upgrades (would be great to actually be able to see at night on the road), clear light fittings all round (is this legal btw?)
Interior Preferably recaro interior in front, though poss some other bucket seats (preferably reclining). Or maybe "just" full interior retrim?!
Carbon dash kit - white light up dials - sports wheel (I like the roughtrax one that a few people seem to have).
ICE - Alpine b/t headset with iPod dock in centre console. Upgraded front speakers (door speakers?). Don't need an untza-untza boom box or blue neons underneath though!

Would love to hear all suggestions. Especially serious ones, though appreciate they may be in the minority on here .

Is the 2.4 engine dead? Why not fit the Lexus engine yourself? You would need to do all of the research yourself. People in USA have been doing this conversion way longer than over here.
If my 3.0 was to ever die, I would not look at stripping and rebuilding that lump, even though I do prefer turbo Diesels in general.
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

I saw a land rover 90 a couple of days ago, a fairly new one I think it might have been anniversay or special edition, it had fantastic looking reclining black leather and suede recaro sports seats very similar to rally seats but definately not buckets..They caught my eye froma a distance. Somewhere to look maybe.
Its all about the journey not the destination.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, there goes my career choice down the toilet!

Actually, it's Australia/New Zealand that are the pioneers of the 1UZ-FE swap, the U.S. just talk about it a lot.

        Do your research!!

I just meant that if he is scrimping on money then he should look into doing the work and research himself. I didn't mean for that comment to slander in any way at all!

I havent done any research yet, I stumbled on a few forums.

Don't worry Bushwhacker - I don't think your career is under much threat from me...!!!
I am however now very very experienced in mechanicry after a couple of forays under the bonnet and dash.
Just to help you out, here is the sum total of my vast accumulated wisdom.
              1. Always do any work on gravel. When you drop things, it is much more fun looking for them amongst thousands of different coloured stones of the same approximate size as the vital thing you dropped. Sometimes this can entertain and amuse for at least an hour.
              2. The engine bay is a useful device for catching nuts, bolts and other vital componentry. Anything falling in there will stay there for the life of the truck, meaning you haven't actually "lost" it at all. If it does fall out, it will fall on the gravel. See 1.
              3. Electrical testing equipment is expensive and unnecessary. Just rub wires together and see what happens. If it smokes, sparks or bangs, then you must be doing something right.
              4. Deadlines help. If you need your Surf for a journey later, why not start dismantling it two hours before? This adds real spice, and increases the pleasure and fun of 1.
              5. There is a lot of talk about using the "correct" tools. A hammer and some pliers are all you need. Nuts which have been stripped right back to a shiny silvery circle are lighter and look smart. They are also impossible to remove, which means that the thing you were about to destroy with amateur meddling may just remain intact.
              6. Always have your iphone in your back pocket when working underneath the Surf. This means that when you finally give up whatever it was you were trying to do, you will have the new, equally fiddly, but slightly more acheivable task of repairing the screen when you come inside.
              7. Beer always helps. This is probably obvious.
              8. A little bit of knowledge is a very dangerous thing. Accordingly, do not make the mistake of trying to learn anything before you start. Just have a go. How difficult can it be?
Anyway, don't hesitate to get in touch for more advice...

Seriously, having done quite a lot of research, the conversion (and the man for it!) is a given. What I am interested in is what else I should be considering doing at the same time. I am not looking to scrimp on money, just realise that doing everything that could possibly be done is probably not realistic.

Treadlox - I love the sound of those. I shall have a dig around to see if I can find out some more.

                It has halted research somewhat.

I mean after all, I did say Jap Import once!

It would appear I misunderstood the first post here. So I apologise!!!

When I read "Engine - Bushwhacker Lexurf - no question"
This, I understood, that having a Lexus fitted was not possible. I just assumed due to financial reasons.

                      Sorry for the misunderstanding

Don't knock him. He was a man who overcame an obvious lack of intellect to become the most powerful man on earth. And he had nothing to help him but a purchased Yale education, membership of a generations-strong political dynasty and billions of dollars of oil money.
