advice needed

i am looking at a suzuki vitara lwb diesel auto its cheap at around £400 but its only word of mouth as to how good it actually is i want to know apart from rust (well its a vitara) what the engines are like is it a suzuki lump or is it somebody else's ie peugeot are the auto boxes any good and off road abilities aren't going to matter as this will be on road most of the time maybe the odd field for shooting vermin
are its road manners any good i know that a friend had the 1.6 petrol version but that cooked its head and cracked the block but he had for quite a few years with no problems before the head went and he was using it on and off road and he would really put it through its paces any info that i can get will be appreciated thanks
