Old Skool phat tyre

Hi i am new to the forum so learning as i go along but here is a bit about me and my Surf.

I,ve had my Surf for about two years and I absolutely love it, we use it for everything. On road off road to the beach, from the beach, on the beach you get the picture. I dont think I`ve owned a car I have`nt had a relationship with, from Renault kangoo4x4 to mondeo st220. I have to say the surf trumps the all.

Well of late i had a flagging relationship with it, until that is i found this web site, I needed advice and boy I got it, so I decided on a look, took the advice and away I went.

Old Skool hot rod come muscle car. The rear wheels look like they are off a dragster, all it needed was some new boots and a lot of detailing. I put 325/60/15`s on the rear and 31/10.50/15`s up front onthe original 7" rims.

It just looks right I cant explain it any better than that. Its the first time that someone has stopped me to ask what car it was and then a barrage of questions followed. I am sure you, the other members get it all the time. I just cant get the pictures to do it justice.

Only one potential problem I can see, is if the front and rear tyres are not the same rolling circumference, it'll cause transfercase/diff problems.

Hi Bushwhaker, thanks for the reply any information is appreciated.

When I was looking into this I worked out that the circumference difference was 7mm smaller on the rear wheel. I consulted custom car sites and american muscle car specialists who`s wheel differences are much greater than 7mm. It could be a problem when 4 wheel drive is engaged but then the wheels should be slipping anyway.

If anyone else thinks its a potential problem or hazard please let me know, my research so far says its ok.

if its only in loose sand it probably won't matter, but it'll wear/break something on anything reasonably firm.

Could have gone for 33x12.5x15's on the rear to keep it all the same. I'm hoping the truck is matt black and has a shrunken head hanging off the rear view mirror ?


EDIT: I should have said 31x12.5x15 but I'm not sure many people make them.

Hi Tony, I love the Surf and I dont want to wreck it, and this is why this site is invaluable, the 7mm difference I worked out is about 3-3.5 mm overall and people are buying and running part worn tyres with that amount of difference without too much bother. But with your experience and knowledge any advice given will obviously be taken on board, do you think~
A. its ok to run in 2 wheel drive? or B. Should I strip them off ?

One other thing I looked at before I chose this option "wisely or unwisely" was that BMW X5`s run different size tyres front/back front, "245/45 R19. rear, 275/40 R19" and they are permanent 4 wheel.

Only 0.5mm difference between those tyres. Permanent 4x4's have a centre diff so differences won't matter.

btw your front wheels have a circumference of approx 2472.4mm, and your rears are approx 2420.6mm making a difference of 51.8mm

Brilliant post cheers, Its shiny blue and has a burgundy buddah on the dash, I also have to admit that the brand new Marshall Ventures were £50 each ballanced and fitted.

There is pic of it on the rigs page with my user name.

I`m off the garage to find a pot of matt black.

Nice clean truck! - you can get Landcruiser wheels which look the same as the surf ones but have a bigger offset. A pair on the rear would push the tyres further out of the arches enhancing the look even more. You planning on jacking up the rear suspension too ?

2wd is fine, TBH 5mm or so I wouldn't be overly worried about, lots of people have different brands on fronts and backs, even same size tyre are different fromdifferent manufacturers.

...and those BMW sizes are only 5mm different dia.
